02 OBITUARIES MAURICE DOUGLAS BURNET SMITH (SMITTY) On Wednesday, February 21, 1985, in Hawaii, Mr. Maurice Douglas Burnet Smith, aged 75 years, beloved husband of Ann (Nan) Smith, of Winnipeg. Following cremation in Hawaii, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at 11:00 am in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 232 Kennedy with Rev. Tom Saunders officiating. The service will terminate at the chapel.

Besides his wife Nan, he is survived by son Douglas in Antigonish, N.S., daughter Maureen Marquardt in Toronto, and four grandchildren. Mr. Smith was born in London, England November 30, 1909, coming to Canada as a child. He was employed as an office boy with the Free Press 1927, and then as a writer in the early 1930's. In 1937 he went to Britain and then Scotland where he began writing program notes for the Scottish Ice Hockey Association.

In 1939 he married Ann (Nan) McKenzie. After the war they returned to Canada where he rejoined the Free Press. becoming sports editor in 1944. Mr. Smith was an avid golfer and his many interests included baseball, hockey and football.

He was instrumental in establishing a national schoolboys curling championship. Mr. Smith had been a member of the Masonic Order with Ancient Landmark Lodge in Winnipeg and Lodge No. 103 in Perth. Scotland.

He was the charter president of the Winnipeg Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, and was elected to the F.R.C. portion of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Mr. Smith was made a life member of the Manitoba Curling Association in 1970 in recognition of his many years of service. Honorary pallbearers will be Messrs.

Stewart MacPherson, Jack Matheson, Jack Wells, Harold Sigurdson, Al Vickery, Norm Coston, Guy Simonis and Elman Guttormson.
