April The shareholders of the Toronto Electric Light Company at their meeting on Saturday afternoon: unanimously decided not to dispose of their holdings to the city at 9135 per share but to aeU their shares to a syndicate -represented by the National Trust Company for 9135 per share The decision was reached after' Sir Henry Pellatt had pointed out that the offer obligated the company to readjust their contract with the Electrical Development Company and other things which they could not do and litigation would ensue which would make the value ref the liquid assets to the shareholders questionable It- was the opinion of Sir Henry that the company' had never been fairly treated They had petitioned the government to have the provisions under which their franchise -1 -was granted carried out That was to make the city purchase at 'a price fixed by arbitration They had received no reply The city was afraid to purchase on this basis as they knew they would have to pay more for thejtock than they wanted to pay isident Matthews also spoke briefly holders that' the offer presented through the Trust company was tha best that could be expected The city and tha government had practically forced the company to tell out at a time when they were commencing to reap a benefit from their investment He thought it better for the city and the province that tliere be opposition to the Hydro-Electric Commission Even if the offer had been a favorable one he would have preferred the company to have continued in opposition If it ia a group of American capitalists who have made a
