Rev Mansell did not agree with all of the provisions-of foe baris of union but thought it would be a calamity to vote against it The basis would be righted by a sanctified Jaiy He had opposed the basis of union of foe old Methodist Clmren bat admitted now that he had been wrong Mr Fred -Mann thought the delegates entitled to say whether they agreed with the whole basis or were in favor of making changes in certain parts Rev Dr linscoft said it was necessary to meet conditions as they existed AU told he did hot see how a wiser document could bo produced than the basis of union or one which would be likely to be more acceptable to the churches -The basis gave the essential Christian principles and a practical working basis in order that the churches might work together in a practical and united manner to accomplish more work' for God Rev J3 Moyer wanted to! know what the resolution really meant Dr Linscott It means -that-we accept the principles of union but do not swallow all the details 1 The Amendment Rev Dr Scott then moved the following amendment to the resolution: We the members of this district meeting while not desiring to oppose the union of the Methodist-Congregational and Presbyterian churches in Canada upon the terms of the proposed basis of union if It should be heartily approved by the Methodist people and whilst we are in full accord with the spirit that underlies this movement we would like to have the method of cooperation planned andLoccepted aa a basis of cooperation for a working policy by the cburches given a talr and foil trial before the question of organic union Is submitted to' the people of Moth d-ism rs -V' In a word cold Dr Scott the purport of the amendment was to let the' basis of organic union simmer in the meantime proceed in the method of co-operaton retaining the distinctive character enthusiasm and dynamics that had characterised Methodism Rev1 it Linscott held the amendment was impossible and would place too meeting in an' illogical position' The other chnrches were acting and it was necessary to accept or reject the basis as a whole- The amendment In effect said try something else firsts but there was nothing else to try for foe "something else" was -not before them Rev-Dr-ficott said that while the other churches 1 were acting amendments were being attached The Presbyterian General Assembly for Instance had tied up the Presbyteries by a general order but never theiees amendments had been submitted At this stage Dr Linscott changed his resolution so that It read that The feature at the anpual mooting of Brantford district of the Hamilton Conference of the Methodist Church held at Brant Avo Church yesterday which was attended by 25 ministerial and lay delegatee from the various churches in the district was a discus' Sion of church union which culmlnat- in the adoption of a resolution do-clarine In favor of-organic union the Methodist Presbyterian and- Con-gregatlonal Churches in Canada All present appeared to be ln sympathy with' the spirit of union but some led by Rev Dr'CT- Scott who sub- Oiitted an Amendment proposed that a federation or co-operation In church work' be tried for the present in ol der that union might take place at a later datev if deemed desirable in the llght of experience and if ''ratified by the Methodist people The amendment was defeated and having supported it and lost its 'supporters did not oppose the original motion' for they did not wish to be understood as opposing union if it were the will of the people that it-shxmld be adopted 1 Nearly half the delegates bad retired before the vote was taken 'at 815 There were 'several other interesting items at'tbo- meeting among: them -1' the routine reports Showing the mein bership And operations -V of' the "churches of the district during the past -Year i Lsy 'delegates were elected to the annual conference at Galt in' June and committee appoint' mentswere A Church Union Dsbati Ph When ilia business of the-mretirst had to disposed of the quCriion of if church union was tbe outsets tlicre was some iiiseu- jui is to- what1-form' the debate mid aa 'suurnv and as to-what expression of opinion was -desired by conference V' In order to facilitate matters Bey Dr Linscott moved that' tlte meeting proceed to vote yesor no whether it accept or reject basis of' church union Rev Dr Strongman seconding the resolution Resolution In opening the discussion Dt Lin i scott remarked that on this question was sometimes on the fence and sometimes on one side and then on the other Ilia attitude however might be -summarised in a declaration that If Christ's spirit had so impressed the churches that tliey were strong enough to resist the baneful tendencies ol wealth and power he was Inclined to take the risk involved and vote for the union i- Rev A I Bnyder asked what was the history of the Methodist union in this line- -v: Dr Linscott admitted' that it had been good' but added tliat otherwise il guuled by history he would be forced to vote against it as til churches which had gone to tlie devil fallen victims of r- Rev' Dr Strongman said that when 4 out of 68 Presbyteries had said yea it would be out of place for the meeting now to say nay He would great ly regret such an outcome' particularly at this period of expansion when the greatest Protestant church in the world should spread over all the world Ilev Robt Keefer was not prepared to support the motion as hewss not in favor of the basis of union not did be want to record a direct negative He thought that members shout i have foe privilege of amending the motion Rev Dr Scott said he would have to refrain from voting yea or no and yet he did not like to go unrecorded 1 The union of the spirit of the churches was the Divine end Whether organic union of the churches as at present proposed would best acromplish tbit end was open to question at trie present lime Personally be would like to see the courtship conti uo longer before a marriage and suggested that federation be tried which in working out would show whether closer union was desirable The Method st Church if forced at once to say yes' or no on the question of organic union could not present unanimity We were living in days of trusts and mergers which however in themselves were hot a menace but rather a form of cooperation To accomplish union it was1 necessary to find a common divisor The union for instance could urged and this argument was irresistible on business grounds for a working basis of co-operation If it can accomplish this to meet business considerations it will fulfil the chief immediate aim and time could -be given for foe consideration of a closer union the federation being merely for Co-opbrative purposes Continuing his argument Dr Scott pointed out that churches are organised on great convictions and the fear-'in "union would be that what Methodism would gain in business co-operation it might lose in foe surrender of things it held as vital and important la illustration he mentioned a number of points such aa thj Congregational standard of doctrine and the Congregational polity in vital respects Having discussed these he questioned whether Canada had reached the stage where Congregational polity for example should supersede that of Methodism for i foe salvation of the world He felt that the limitations and requirements of foe Methodist Church' had justitfied themselves and that there was enough in them yet' to make her a great evangelising church but added that some of these features had some way been lost sight of in foe basis of rihion Dr Scott made it dear-however that he did not desire to oppose union and if the majority declared in favor of it he would submit continuing to teach the doctrine of the Methodist Church Rev Mr Daniels said many pro- mistake liberty for license Ji we down the fences on polity discard foe Methodist rides and the Presbyterian doctrine shall we not find ourselves in a large church' with length and breadth but nojtHclr-aessf Principles were greater than rales orlaws but conditions 'being wife take him back
