Cut Authobitieb a Kossuth. It will be seen by reference to the report of ihe proceeding, of the Common Council let evtniiig, that quite ap icy end ipirited discussion took place in relation to the acceptance of a report respecting what course the City Government would adopt iu relation to the visit of Koaeuth as the guest of the State. The report waa signed by Aldermen Cary and Allen, and Hewn. Gardner, Thompson, Jewell, Haskell, Kimball and Thomas, of the Common Council. This report waa accepted by the Board of Aldermen on the 5th and appeared in the newspapers the succeeding day.

From what we have gathered in our intercom with the citizens, we should infer, that the course proposed by the Committee meets with the warm approval of a vast majority of the people of Boston. The report is courteous to the distinguished exile, and to the State authorities. In view of the position of the ease, we cannot see what other course, con sistent with a due regard to the honor of the city, could have been recommended. We believe that when the excitement of the hour shall have passed away, and the affair is Tiewed in the calm light of history, it will he found that the course of the City Government will commend itself to the impartial judgment and sober second thoughts" of all men whose approval is to be desired. We have thus far heard hut one sentiment in regard to the matter.

And we apprehend that as time rolls on, it will be found that the course of the authorities will be justly regarded as worthy of special commendation. We regret to record a fact which wss elicited by the discussion last evening. It appears that when the committee representing the city of Boston had an interview with Kossuth they were somewhat startled by his query, Why did you NOT COME BEFORE?" While we are willing to adopt the sentiment of an English statesman, in pardoning something to the spirit of liberty, it surely requires more liberality than wo are willing to adopt to forget the above unfortunate salutation received by the representatives of our city. We suspect that the State authorities are rather more desirous to divide the expenses incident to the reception of M. Kossuth, than they are to hare the honors divided." We hare no doubt that the Mayor of the city, and our own fellow citizens will show all possible respect to the guest of the Commonwealth, next week; that so for as the city of Boston is concerned, its high character, and its ancient feme, will be folly sustained by its public officers and citizens.

More than this we do not ask. Tuk Escaped Prisoxkr. It haring been slated that McLaughlin cftected his escape from the prisoner's room of the Municipal Court simply by the use of table rase knife, the Atlas says the romance of this story has been somewhat marred hr the Cut that Bums carpenters had been at work in a lobby adjoining, and had left soma of their tools, including mallet and ehlael, in the room in which the priiuuere were confined, which McLaughlin noticed end applied them to his own use. In connection with thin it should be known that the boards which it is aid he cut with the knife, were previously loose, and had indeed been sawed off between two beanie, which rendered their removal comparatively easy. After taking up the boards, McLaughlin escaped through the floor to the entry underneath, before stated.

A fellow prisoner attempted to go through the some operation, but not being of so slight a fimu as his predecessor, be could not queue liimaelf through the aperture. Reovlab Nomination. Municipal Meeting 1 the Mayor and Aldermen. A special meeting of the Mayor and Aldermen was held yesterday. An order waa passed, the Joint Special Committee who have in charge the subject ol making additions to tlie City Hall, to report any other plan tliry may expedient, by which accoiumoibiliuiia fur all Ilia city ufficrrx and tlie Fublie Library may be bad in one building. The Mayor waa joined to the Committee. An order waa passed, appointing Aldermen bleeper and Rich a committee to audit the omiunta of the Treasurer of the Fnukliu Fund.

Tlie following praanilde and order were adopted Whereas, it expedient that tlie Mayor and Aldermen, for the time being, slionld know and be thoroughly etta-ftrd with tlie persons whp uumpuae tlie Watch and Police Departments of tlie city, therefore Uniered, That hereafter, the members of the Watch and Police Departmenta. including tlie heads of Ihe Departments, be appointed annually this Board, and that Tin Historical Society or Massachusetts. This Society held its annual meeting at it rooms over the Savings Bank, on Thursday last, the 15th inst. The following is a list oT the officers elected for the ensuing year: Hob. James Savage, President; Joseph Willard, Recording Secretary; Rev.

Alexander Young, D.D., Corresponding Secretary, Richard Frothingham, Treasurer; Rev. Joseph B. Felt, Librarian; Isaac F. Davis, Cabinet Keeper; Hon. Edward Everett, Rev.

George E. Ellis, George Livermore, N. B. Shurtleff, M. Charles Deane, Standing Committee.

This Society, one of the oldest and uiot efficient literary institutions in the eountiy, waa founded in and is the parent of the numerous Historical Societies which now exist in almost every State of tlie Union. In the course of sixty years it has published thirty octavo volumes of historical collections, which contain a mass of materials invaluable to the student and writer of American history. Its thirty-first volume is now in the press, and will be published in a few weeks. By it charter the number of memben is limited to sixty, among whom are to be found the names most distinguished in this department of literature, such as Sparks, Frescott, Bancroft, Ticknor, Everett, and others. To these has recently been added the name of Francis Farkman, the author of the admirable History of Fontiae.

The Society holds a stated meeting on the third Thursday of each month, when valuable and interesting commnnicatious are presented and read. The use of its Library, which contains a large and precious collection of manuscripts and printed books relating to the history of the country, is extended with great liberality to all who are engaged in historical inquiries. The society, unfortunately, lias no fluids to purchase books or even to pay the salary of a librarian. Its whole income is derived from an assessment of three dollars a year on its members, amounting to a hundred and eighty dollars annually, which is barely sufficient to pay its incidental expenses. A working society like this, which has already accomplished so much, is certainly deserving of the patronage of an intelligent community; and it is greatly to be desired that some of the surplus wealth of the city and state might he anted into this channel, so that 11 te society's rooms might he kept constantly open for study, and a librarian he always on the spot to facilitate the investigations of that growing class of in-quire rs the students of American history, v.

Soiree Musicals. Quite an agreeable musical entertainment, of a private character, was enjoyed Wednesday evening, by the friends of Mr. Sale-monski's pupils at the residence of one of their number. A printed programme was flirnished, and in all appointments for performance, the elegant saloon waa transformed into a miniature concert room. The programme comprised a solo by Mr.

G. F. Hayter, who presided st the piano and two violin solos by Mr. Suck, a composition by Ernst and Frame's ilelancolie, in the artist's best style. The vocal part was made up from the gems of the modem composers, in form of solo, duo and trio; the whole closing with the Prayer of Moses," in chorus, and affording a most pleasing entertainment, alike gratifying to teacher, pupils and friends present.
