117 IMP PAN I AliKAf fl. 3UNUAT AUll. 13. IVH cessful. LIBERATED MALE Career-oriented men often postpone love stow a FOR 20 OFF ON ALL WOOL AND WOOL BLEND COATS By JIM SANDERSON "I've discovered a new twist to the Men's Fear of Intimacy routine," a reader named Patricia says.

"It's men who say they can't have an intimate, committed relationship with a woman until they're successful in whatever their business is. "The first time around, I thought the guy was an oddball. But when the next two men I dated said exactly the same thing, I began to wonder if this was a trend. Several close women friends have had similar experiences. Has the pursuit of happiness been superseded by the pursuit of fame and fortune?" Pat, one of the troubles between men and women has always been that they have different time priorities in their approach to "happiness." Having an intimate, committed relation is important to most men too, but they don't feel nearly as urgent about it as many women do.

Since the beginning of time, right up to the present generation, not many options have been open to women as to what they could do with their lives. A woman's "career" was to find a man who would support her, and father the chldren she expected to have. That's why we still make such a fuss about the bride at a wedding, while the groom gets relatively little attention. It's her big triumph; she has succeeded in the all-important first step In her "career." Even the most highly motivated of today's working women do not feel immune from the past, from the sneaky fear that maybe anatomy is destiny after all. At a certain stage every date becomes, in a subconscious way, a prospecting adventure.

Is this THE ONE? Naturally she feels upset when man after man doesn't want to get serious. Her looks may be fading, she wo.ries, and the biologic clock is running out. A male does not feel any of these pressures. In fact, society has always told him that his first duty was NOT to get serious about a woman until he has found the means to support her. (Of course, today, a wife may be able to earn as much or more than her husband, but he can't count on this.) Every male also is imprinted with the drive to achieve, to make a mark on the world, and if he doesn't use the brains, talents and energies he was given, he may see himself a double-barrelled failure.

Women unconsciously contribute their share of pressure about this. No matter what she says, a woman gets very nervous around a young man who says he's more concerned with happiness than being suc normally produced by the body to combat infection. Large amounts of the protein can be obtained by isolating the human gene that codes for its production and inserting it into a bacteria called E.coli, thus inducing the bacteria to produce the same protein. Leavitt said his study of the first major tests of such purified interferon established how much of it patients can tolerate. It also snowed that interferon stimulates specific cells in the body's immune system, which battles disease, improving their ability to control tumor growth, he said.

Leavitt, director of the Maryland Cancer Center's immunity laboratory, said 55 patients with advanced cancers were treated for 28 days with injections of interferon. He cautioned while the Interferon controls tumor OK, but does he have to put all his emotions In deep freeze while he drives to the top? Many men don't. But it's a tough world. Some men feel they have such a tenuous grip on winning vs. losing that they can't bear to surrender any part of them selves, to anybody.

They have no available psychic reserve to risk. It's useless to press these kind of men until they re ready, Pat. Shift your aspirations elsewhere quickly. But don't be sore about it. Every woman has a male or two In her life whom she doesn't consider a serious "candidate" but whom she likes having around on a friendly basis.

They are fun or Interesting and convenient. Men do that too, If they can. So he isn't ready for a total relationship. So he doesn't plan to give up other women. So he doesn't want you to make demands.

Why not accept his limited offer, while you continue to look around? Pat, the fact that you expected commitment from each of the last three men you dated suggests that you are pushing too hard, that you are feeling a kind of desperation about not having a man to call your very own. Several weeks ago I wrote about Dr. Penelope Russianoff 's new book, "Why Do I Feel I'm Nothing Without a Man?" Several women readers did get that book and report that they now feel a lot better about their lives, no matter what men say or do. growth phenomenon occurred consistently in the test tube, the effects were not as clear in patients. "Seven patients did experience tumor reduction during the drug trial, but we don't know if this ties in with the test tube effect," Leavitt said. "It may be that other things blocked the beneficial anti-cancer response" in the unaffected patients, he said. "We know the interferon directly affects tumors." Side effects of high doses of interferon showed flu-like symptoms including chills, fever, headache, muscle ache and lethargy, he said. Some patients experienced decreased appetite, nausea and diarrhea.

Other side effects were a decrease in white cell counts and some liver irritation but all symptoms disappeared when interferon was withdrawn, Leavitt said. your baby's growing up From first step to first day of school, remember the special times with professional portraits taken regularly at Sears. "We saw responses in a number of tumors that would not have been expected to respond to other treatments available," Dr. Richard Leavitt said of the study, conducted April through December 1981.

"That's very encouraging. This may be a valuable compound." "I have no doubt it has anticancer activity," he said. "The question now is in which cancers this occurs and how meaningful tumor shrinkage Is. Will it improve cancer treatment and improve the lives of cancer patients?"
