SECTION A PAGE 4 THE NORTH BAY NUGGET TUESDAY JUNE 2 2009 nationalnews BROCK UNIVERSITY: Document put on display NEW HOSPITAL Alternative level of care patients a concern Made-in-Sudbury solution needed MPP fjlCgfr-A tr 4 I i CAROL MULLIGAN Sun Media SUDBURY There is no way the Ontario government would build a new one-site hospital in Sudbury and then allow it to become a nursing home says Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucd He Is confident Health and Long-term Care Minister David Caplan will act quickly to address Sudbury Regional Hospital's alternate level of care crisis and not allow that to happen Bartolucd said The Sudbury ALC Community Steering Group is recommending to the province that Sudbury Regional Hospital's Memorial site remain open temporarily to care for as many as 150 alternative level of care patients after the one-site hospital opens in 2010 The committee has warned that more than half the one-site hospital's 450 beds will be taken up by ALC patients unless other space is found for them ALC patients are largely frail elderly people who require acute hospital care but for whom there are no other services in the community Bartolucd said It was he who challenged the community to strike the steering group and come up with made-in-Sudbury solutions for the ALC problem The steering group has done that but those solutions come with some hefty pricetags Depending on who would run the Memorial site it could cost between $18 million and $49 million to care for ALC patients there every year until a new nursing home in Chelmsford is built and other programs begin redudng ALC numbers I'm going to advocate in very real ways for one of the three options or a combination of those options or another option that achieves what we want said Bartolucd A decision will have to be made soon said the MPP because the move to the one-site hospital will begin in January The steering co-chair Dc Peter Zalan has warned the one-site hospital be able to function properly if 280 of its 450 beds are filled with people who do not need to be there not going to happen said Bartolucd We wouldn't allow that to happen collectively as a community and I think the government is going to allow that he said not going to build a hospital for acute care then end up with ALC patients Bartolucd called the formation of the Sudbury ALC Community Steering Group last stand We have to come up with the right solution and we have to ensure that the game plan is a realistic one Honestly Keeping the Memorial site open for three years solve the problem said Bartolucd will be an ongoing concern' But we have to make that initial step to alleviate the pressures and then our hospital (will be) what everybody wants our hospital to be BOB TYMCZYSZYN Sun Media An 800-year-old vellum land Sharron said Monday as media and Brock faculty gathered around the old vellum in a quiet lOth-floor room of the Schmon Tower You find something that doesn't quite fit but it's important at the same time It's also a mystery For the past two months Sharron head of Brock's special collections has been trying to find out how the parchment came into the university's possession He found it folded up with an accompanying seal and quill sharpener several months ago when he was making way for an influx of microfilms Sharron knew then it was old but put it aside until he had more time to really study it I ENVIRONMENT: City could the Lost Ark of the Medieval Latin jargon things are pretty formulaic Plugging names of witnesses on the vellum Into an online database also led die trio back to the 1200s
