I A I PAGE 8 THE NORTH BAY NUGGET I WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2010 CRIME: Says he never touched two boys Cop accused of molestation testifies A veteran Winnipeg police officer testified in his own defence Tuesday and heatedly denied allegations he molested two young boys. "It would be more than inappropriate, it would be sick," said Kenneth Anderson, his voice rising in anger. "Who does that? I don't." Anderson immediately apologized for his emotional outburst. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he said softly. "I don't do anything like that." Anderson, 50, is on trial charged with two counts of sexual assault and four other sex offences.

On Monday, a now 14-year-old boy testified he was sleeping at Anderson's home two or three years ago when he awoke to find Anderson molesting him. A 15-year-old boy testified Anderson molested him during a hotel stay three years ago. The boy told court he awoke to find Anderson sucking his toes and caressing his leg. Anderson told court he met the boys through his involvement with a North End drop-in centre. Anderson said he took a particular interest in the younger boy, who he recruited as a "fire keeper" for sweat lodge ceremonies he held at his Balmoral, home.

"If I had a son, it would have been (him)," Anderson said. Anderson said the boy would sleep overnight at his home following sweats and continued to do so, at his own request, until shortly before Anderson's arrest. Anderson said he took both boys and another boy to a Pine Falls hotel after a visit to a local festival was cancelled due to rain. Anderson told court he had to reprimand the older boy several times for his behaviour at QMI Agency POLITICS: Said he was 'rude and QMI Agency Kenneth Jack Anderson is charged with two counts of sexual assault and four counts of sexual touching, stemming from incidents with two 11-year-old boys dating back to 2006. Anderson is a former Winnipeg cop and employee with CFS.

the hotel pool. On Monday, defence lawyer Hymie Weinstein accused the older boy of fabricating the sexual assault allegations in retaliation for Anderson reprimanding him. Anderson said he believed the younger boy was lying in support of the older boy. Anderson said his "world fell apart" the day he learned of the allegations against him. "I didn't know what was going on," he said.

The trial will resume Jan. 10, when the defence is expected to call one final witness. dean.pritchard@sunmedia.ca offensive' to staff Turfed Alberta MLA Tory apologizes for remarks EDMONTON Maverick Alberta MLA Raj Sherman says he's sorry for hurting the feelings of a former colleague. But sorry isn't good enough, says Alberta Energy Minister Ron Liepert, a target of Sherman's criticism. "To be honest, I'm quite a passionate fellow.

I made some comments and saw that Minister Liepert was genuinely hurt," Sherman said Tuesday. "I apologize for the fact his feelings were hurt because of the comments I made." Liepert, however, didn't appear impressed. He said he wants the punted Tory to retract comments he made last week. "I said I don't want an apology, I want him to withdraw, publicly retract the remarks he made about my character that he can't substantiate," Liepert said. Sherman was critical of Liepert's tenure as Alberta's health minister saying he was "rude and offensive" to front-line staff while running the province's medical system.

The Edmonton-Meadowlark MLA said he can't take back what's already been said. "When you make certain comments, once you make them, you can't retract then," said Sherman. The out-spoken Sherman, who has heaped criticism on the government and Alberta's -care system, was booted from government caucus earlier this 1 week and now sits as an independent MLA. had my heart ripped out of my chest, bounced around for about an FRANK LANDRY QMI Agency hour before it got put back in," said Sherman. "I didn't really have a pulse for about an hour." Alberta premier Ed Stelmach said the problem wasn't that Sherman was "speaking on behalf of patients," but rather directing criticism at specific caucus colleagues, like Liepert.

"He made some remarks about individual members of caucus that were simply not true," said Stelmach. Meanwhile, the opposition parties continued to rally in the legislature Tuesday, demanding Alberta Health Services CEO Stephen Duckett be turfed over ongoing problems in the health-care system. Things came to a head last week when Duckett refused to speak with reporters, saying he was too busy eating a cookie. Liberal boss David Swann questioned why Sherman was given the boot for saying the health care system was broken, yet Duckett continues to collect a pay cheque. Swann said Duckett "hasn't shown any ability to fix the system and has thumbed his nose at the system." Both Stelmach and Health Minister Gene Zwozdesky said it's not their place to decide whether Duckett keeps his job.

That decision, legally, rests with the AHS board, said Stelmach. The premier, however, called Friday's cookie incident offensive, saying it distracts from the work AHS is doing to fix problems in the health care system. The AHS board could decide Duckett's fate as early as Wednesday, he said. frank.landry@sunmedia.ca See all the news unfolding Your Canadian news just a click away VISIT canoe.ca A Quebecor Media Company yourlifemoments.ca Marking your milestones. 1-866-541-6757 Obituaries In Memoriam Thanks Births Celebrations More Deaths ABBOTT, Zeta Peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital on Friday November 19, 2010, at the age of 88 years.
