remained as councilman for coo term and was then appointed commissioner of publle institutions of Washington the selection' being made by Gov John Rogers This was a whole man's Job In which Commissioner Ids ter found excellent opportunity to show his ability as a managing genius tho state institutions becoming organised undor his supervisions for the first time on a business footing and Years Ago Climb to Top Is Rapid Friend Talks LOUIS HART GOES TO EXECUTIVE CHAIR Chosen Twice as Lieutenant Governor Incumbent Presides Twice Over Senate Sessions at Olympia He Comes From Missouri sister 'I Governor Lister died of what his attending physicians diagnosed as cardio-vascular-renal disease which is said to affect both heart and kidneys After a virtual collapse early this year during the session of the state legislature at Olympia Governor Lister was ordered to cease his executive duties and rest Lieut Gov Hart took over the duties It was not known definitely here today whether Lieut Gov Hart would become governor or remain acting governor until the next general election in 1920 Best failing to effect much improvement in liis condition the governor was taken to the state hospital at Steilacoom where he waa kept under the close care of Dr Keller his old family physician Upon leaving the hospital there it was reported Governor lister had improved and he was returned to Olympia He legislature passed an appropriation for him to take a trip to California of elsewhere but it was thought inadvisable for him to leave Becoming steadily worse again the governor was brought to a hospital here a few weeks ago remaining until his death Governor Lister- would have been 48 years old tomorrow He died one day before his 48th birthday June 15 1919 CametoU When 13 Ernest Lister wo4 bora is Halifax Yorkshire England Juno 13 1871 He came to this country is September 1884 with Ms (J Lister) family and was the youngest member being only 13 years old at that time He had received an elementary school education only and did sot continue school after coming to this country In 1886 he entered the employ of the Standard Iron Works nn establishment of Lister 4b Bans os a apprentice and while engaged thus became a member of the Iron Union and won fw several years its local secretary In 1894 hn wan elected councilman to represent the 7th ward in tho city eouneil of Tacoma In 1896 he was one of John Rogers strongest supporters in the latter's candidacy for governor and woe one of his closest friends and advisers He was afterwards appointed commissioner of state institutions and single-handed had charge of ell the elecmosynaiy aad penal institutions of the state He continued in this position for some tune after Governor death resigning to enter the contracting and building trades The firm of Lister Scott earned out many public projects including bfrracks at Vancouver paving newer and other public work in different parts of the state Ho was prominent in democratic politics his public offiee and contracting having brought him into contact with men in all parts of the state and his former affiliation with the labor unions kept him in closest touch with the laboring classes When Judge Block was disqualified os a candidate for governor on the democratic ticket Ernest luster was named in his stead Although the election waa close at hand in a whirlwind campaign he woe elected over former Governor Hay who was then a candidate to sueeeed himself Eleeted os a democrat he had to deal with a republican senate and house bat always stood squarely and forcefully for economy and efficiency His administration was such that he was re-clceted governor in 1916 Champion of Temperance Cause 7 In religious matters he was a Methodist coming from the Wesleyan stock of Eogland He had always been a champion of tho temperance cease never having tasted liqnor In enrly boyhood he belonged to the Good Templars' organization and while he wan in power had stood squarely for the dry cause In his early 20s he married Miss Alma Thornton of Tacoma and had two chil- dren Florence a young lady and John a boy of 14 Ho had three brothers Arthur who is at tho head of tho Northern Pacific railway pattern works Alfred who is secretary and business manager of tho Tacoma public school Albert in Olympia aad two sisters Mrs Ada Bpenecr
