"But you can also mutiple yourself to a losing season.

"We're starting with the basics. Football is still a game of blocking, running and tackling and that's what you conceive your offense and defense with." Nifty running by freshman Kevin Jones highlighted the offensive end of the scrimmage. "I thought Jones ran real well," Otolski said. The annual spirited chase for the quarterback job is underway with Central Catholic product Steve Moews, Steve Gumble and Edroy Yancey splitting the duties. Another sometime quarterback, Willie Boyd, will strictly be a receiver.

Gumble connected on a long touchdown pass to Clarence Collins while Moews scampered for a long gain on a quarterback keeper. On defense, Tim Lucas drew praise from Otolski and Octavia High School graduate Rodney Kellar intercepted a pass. Kellar was a tight end last year. Another Central Catholic product, lineman Mike Hagerty, hasn't been at practice all week, Otolski said. It is assumed Hagerty has quit the team, but Otolski said he wasn't sure because Hagerty has yet to talk to him.

The Redbirds have eight more practices leading up to the Red-White Game April 11. By Mark Lewis Saturday's controlled scrimmage marked the end of Phase I of spring practice for the Illinois State University football team and new coach Bob Otolski. It signalled the finish of experimentation with position changes and the initial evaluations of player strengths and weaknesses. "We wanted to assess the talent here during the first two weeks of spring practice," Otolski said. "We also wanted to find out who can play what position.

We don't expect too many moves from this point on." The scrimmage was vintage spring football. A few fumbled snaps here, a couple of interceptions there and the voices of Otolski and his assitants piercing the wonderfully warm March air. "We're making a lot of little mistakes," Otolski said. "That's easy to understand because the players are learning a new system on both offense and defense." The defensive work and good attitude impressed Otolski, a former Indiana University assistant. "I was really pleased with the defensive improvement," Otolski said.

"The other thing that sticks out in my mind is the attitude as far as the players trying to win and trying to improve." Injuries have been few and far between, something Otolski attributes to Clarence Collins training directed above the shoulders. "First of all, we're not going to have injuries," he said. "We'll have pain, but not injuries." That should bring a welcome sigh of relief to ISU fans which have watched the quarterback corps and other positions become decimated by injuries over the past few years. "Our trainer said he's never seen so few injuries and a lot of that has to do with your head," Otolski said. "The kids are much more mentally tough.

We're not very deep and can't afford injuries. "The players are starting to realize the difference between pain and injuries. Football is a game of hitting and there's a certain amount of pain involved." Considering Otolski tutored under the irrepressible Lee Corso at Indiana, one can expect an offense full of surprises to a point.
