SB-Brown, S- Dent, Baker clocks record time, takes pole HARRISBURG, N.C. (AP) Buddy Baker clocked the fastest speed ever at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Wednesday to capture the pole for Sunday's $320,000 National 500. Baker ignored the rain-soaked track and the challenge of Ricky Rudd to drive his Buick around the 1.5-mile track at 165.635 mph.

That breaks the one-lap record set by David Pearson during qualifying for the World 600 last May. It was the first National 500 pole for Baker, who has taken the second spot four times. The top speed puts him in front for the race that marked his first career win in 1967. Rudd, along with Baker, also broke the National 500 qualifying record of 164.304 mph set by Neil Bonnett last year. Rudd qualified second at 164.856 mph.

He held the pole for most of the day until Baker's record-setting performance. Qualifying for the other 25 spots for Sunday's race continues today and Friday. QUALIFIERS 1. "The guy that beat us today has got to be a leading candidate for the Cy Young," White Sox Manager Tony LaRussa admitted grudgingly. "But I don't want to say much beyond that. He's said some unflattering things about our hitters." Norris, 22-9, did not craft the artistic success Wednesday that critics may expect from a Cy Young winner, but he got the job done.

In fact, through the first five innings, he was near-perfect, scattering just three hits and notching six of his seven strikeouts. In the meantime, his teammates were busy. They provided him with two runs in the second, three in the third Mike Heath's two-run triple being the big blow and a solo run in the sixth. But Mike Squires singled off Norris to open the sixth, Harold Baines followed with a triple and Martin made a brief trip to the mound before Lamar Johnson lofted a sacrifice fly to pull the White Sox to within 6-2. "It was a quick visit." explained Martin, who spent the afternoon coaching at third base when Clete Boyer strained a calf muscle.

"I was going to let him go as long as he could." The Oakland bats gave Norris a longer lease on the mound by exploding in the eighth. Ten men went to the plate and five came around to cross it. Jim Essian drove two runs across with a double and after an intentional pass to Mario Guerrero loaded the bases, Dave McKay scored two more with an RBI single. But by the eighth inning, trouble started brewing.
