Wednesdoy, Oct. 16,1963 Students Visit Homes At Alpha ALPHA — The Misses Janet McLaughlin and Karen Bredburg who are students at Illinois State Normal University at Normal, spent Saturday, Sunday and Monday at their respective homes here. Miss Joan Andre, who is a senior student nurse at Mennonitc Hospital in Bloomington, accompanied Miss McLaughlin. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Foster of Peoria visited Sunday at the Mrs. Innis Foster home and called on Mrs. Fern Eiker. Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Lanphere of Marshalltown, Iowa visited Monday with Mrs. Fern Eiker. Laymen's Day worship service will be held Sunday at the Methodist Church at 11 a.m. From 3 to 6 p.m. in the afternoon will be the Methodist parsonage open house. Attend Church Meet Rev. and Mrs. Harvey E. Preston and Mrs. Nyle McCurdy attended the Illinois Baptist state convention Sunday through Tuesday. Others from the Baptist Church who attended the Sunday session were Beth Browning, Karen McLaughlin, Paul Davison, Brent McCurdy, John Barton, Stanley McLaughlin, Louis Browning, Nyle McCurdy, Mrs. C. E. McLaughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sproston, Harold Wind, Owen Carlson and Mrs.. Stella Carlson. Vickie Sue and Michael Bruce, children of Mr. and Mrs; Charles Johnson and Michael Earl and John Edward and Laverne Alan, children of Mr, and Mrs. Earl Etheridge received baptism at the Sunday service in the Methodist Church. < AlWood Cadette Girl Scout Troop 1 will hold a bake sale Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the fire station in Alpha, when coffee and doughnuts also will be served. Homemade Wheat Bread, Family Treat Minestrone Soup Light Whole Wheat, Bread . Fruit Salad with Cheese Light Whole Wheat Bread 1 package active dry yeast- 1 Vi cups warm water 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon salad (not olive) oil 3 cups (about) sifted white flour 1 cup stone-ground whole wheat flour In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the warm water; stir Until dissolved. Stir in salt, brown sugar, molasses and salad oil; gradually stir in 2 cups of the white flour. Place the remaining white and the whole wheat flour on a pastry cloth or board; turn out yeast mixture onto flour. Knead until all the flour is worked in and the dough is smooth and elastic. Turn dough over in greased bowl; cover; let rise in a warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk; let rise again; punch down; let rise again. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan (9 by 5 by 3 inches); let rise until almost to top of pan. Bake in a very hot (450 degrees) oven 45 to 50 minutes. Old-Fashioned Cobbler Hard to Beat as Dessert We tried one of our favorite cobber batters with fresh prune plums with great success. Split Pea Soup Bread Tray Celery, Carrot Sticks and Olives Fresh Plum Cobbler Beverage Fresh Plum Cobbler Mi to 2 pounds fresh prune- plums s /i cup plus V> cup sugar 1 cup sifted flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Vs teaspoon salt Vi cup butter or margarine 1 egg 3 tablespoons milk V\ teaspoon vanilla Wash, pit and quarter plums; there should be 1 quart. Mix with 3 /4 cup sugar in a '.) by 9 by 2 inch cake pan. Sill together the flour, baking powder and sail; cut in butter until it is in tine particles. Boat egg and Vz cup sugar until thick and ivory-colored; beat in milk and vanilla. Fold into flour mixture; do not stir smooth. Spread over plums—batter will be in a thin layer. Bake in a moderate (375 degrees) oven until brown and cake tester inserted in center of topping comes out clean. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
