The Sunday Pantagraph, Nov. 2, 1980 B-3 Western Illinois stops punchless Redbirds pitchout and Mike McNulty recovered for WIU at the 11. Six plays later, the Leathernecks turned the ball over, with Anthony Office intercepting a Paul Marszalek pass. The Redbirds moved eight yards in three plays before Lucious Clark was tackled for a one-yard loss on a fourth-down play. ISU capped its performance by failing twice to score after moving to within seven yards of the end zone in the fourth period and having four downs to work with.

The first time, Fenn was stopped after a one-yard gain on a fourth-and-two. The second time, with less than two minutes to play, freshman quarterback Edroy Yancey was sacked for an eight-yard loss on a first-down play. In addition, ISU was assessed a 15-yard personal-foul penalty. Rodriguez knows how soon the scene can change. "My first year at Iowa State (1976), Earle (Bruce) told me it could be a one-year deal because he had been told he'd be gone if the team didn't win," said Rodriguez.

"He had had three straight 4-7 seasons. That team went 8-3 and he was named the Coach of the Year. "Then, a couple years later, he was the Coach of the Year at Ohio State. That shows how easily things can turn. Before the season, I thought Charlie had about turned the corner at ISU.

"But it comes with the territory (Cowdrey 's announced resignation). I hate to see it happen because Charlie is a class person. But he'll end up on his feet somewhere." WIU's season-record is 3-5. Both of its final two games will be at home. ISU's record is 3-6.

Both of its last two games will be on the road. I i 1km ill "4 2 ftTr-Zryrryrl JZ By Fred Kroner MACOMB Howard Hembrough hasn't missed many Illinois State University football games this season. His son, Jeff, plays for the Redbirds so naturally Hembrough doesn't like to see the team lose. An ineffective offense not only kept ISU from winning Saturday at Hanson Field, but also kept the Redbirds from scoring a touchdown for the third straight game. Even though Western Illinois University saddled Illinois State with a 27-0 setback, Hembrough wasn't too unhappy.

Another son, Mike, plays for the Leathernecks and he doesn't like to see that team lose, either. "It sends chills down my back when they play against each other because I want them to both do well," said Hembrough, a Springfield automobile dealer. "We're lucky parents to have two sons play." Hembrough wore his purple WIU jacket Saturday. He offset that by sitting with ISU Athletic Director Donald Kelley during the game. "I told Don that when the game is at Normal, I'll wear the red jacket," added Hembrough.

"The great thing about our boys is that there is a deep friendship between them. They rib each other a lot, but after the game today they met at midfield and hugged." Injuries Jeff Hembrough was probably the only Redbird in a hugging mood. Four ISU starters didn't finish the game due to injuries wide receiver Rodney Kellar, quarterback Willie Boyd, punter Steve Moews and cornerback Ted Hollingsworth. Whether injured or healthy, all the Redbird players were frustrated at the outcome to a game which had started on a promising note. ISU marched 60 yards on its first possession.

Bill Fenn's six-yard run on the 10th play of the series moved ISU to the Leathernecks' 2-yard line. A clipping penalty on the play forced the Redbirds back to the 19. Moments later, Isaac Camargo missed his seventh field goal try of the year. The Redbirds' defensive unit then held Western in check and forced a punt. At that point, WIU had run six offensive plays and punted twice.

With Boyd completing passes of 15 yards to Eric Tapley and 10 yards to Fenn, ISU marched swiftly downfield. Then, on a first-down run, Fenn fumbled after a seven-yard gain at the 14. That was the first of three fumbles ISU would lose. "We did not play well in any area of the football game," said ISU Coach Charlie Cowdrey. "Every time we got a break offensively, we took ourselves out of it immediately with a fumble or penalty.

Mike Hembrough enjoyed the best game of his two-year career at WIU, rushing for 87 yards. Fenn led the Illinois State offense, rushing for 61 yards. In addition to the two first-half scoring threats, the Red-birds had four potential scoring opportunities in the second half. "If they had scored early, it would have been a real dogfight," said WIU Coach Pete Rodriguez. Turnovers Wade Mauland's blocked punt with 4 minutes, 48 seconds left in the third period gave ISU first-and-goal from the 8.

That lasted only one down. Lorenzo Butler couldn't handle Boyd's option Champaign Minnesota defensive end 8ame Saturday. Illini lost homecoming i iL Schun tackled Illinois running 8ame- t0 Gophers. I've got a sore neck from my face mask nearly being torn off twice." Freshman defensive tackle Mark Butkus said there was a lot of hard hitting. "But, I guess you could say there were some cheap shots too," said Butkus. All the Illini agreed that Dana Noel's 93-yard kickoff return with 9:34 remaining did in the home team. Noel, who is from Wheaton, had been returning kicks for a week. "I thought Noel had a good defensive game," said Salem.

"That kick return was a thing of beauty as far as I was concerned. Our kicking game hasn't been good and we've been trying out different people back there. Things didn't improve on the next play, either; Boyd was tackled for a 12-yard loss. (Pantagraph photo).

Barber dislocated his elbow and is expected to be out for the season. Edwards has a dislocated ankle and Strader a neck injury. The victory gave Minnesota a season record of 4-4, and dropped Illinois to 3-5-1. Barber set the Minnesota running game in motion on the Golden Gophers' second possession with runs of 14 and 31 yards. Illinois helped with two penalties and White plunged over from the two-yard line.

Just as the first quarter ended, Barber capped a 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, and Minnesota led 14-0. Wilson hit Dentino with passes of 21 and 14 yards in the second quarter, then tossed the 25-yard scoring pass to Dentino, who pulled it down in the end zone with defenders all around him. After a scoreless third quarter, Illinois' Dan Gregus recovered a Minnesota fumble and Wilson took the Illini in close enough for Bass to boot the 35-yard field goal. White said he intended to air his views after the season is over relative to the Dave Wilson case and Big 10 officiating. "I have every right in my role as coach to tell my feelings," said White.

By Jim Barnhart Pantagraph sports editor CHAMPAIGN In a clash of predictable offenses, the University of Minnesota football team spoiled Illinois' homecoming with a 21-18 Big 10 Conference victory over the Illini before 51,202 people here Saturday. Illinois, which invented homecoming in 1910, has not been an habitual winner before the old grads. The T'lni have won 29, lost 39, and tied 2 in the annual classic. Minnesota proved it can't pass Saturday by completing just two of six aerials for 56 yards. Illinois proved it can't run with 63 net yards in 26 rushing attempts.

Minnesota coach Joe Salem made the understatement of conference history when he said, "From a fundamental standpoint, you would have to say it was a sloppy game." There were 12 fumbles; Minnesota losing three of eight. There were 66 passes; Illinois quarterback Dave Wilson completing 22 of 59 for 310 yards and two touchdowns. But Wilson had two passes intercepted. There were 22 penalties with Minnesota getting tagged for 133 yards on 13 infractions. Illinois, which trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 14-7 at the half, had seven penalties, including five personal fouls, in the rough-hitting first and second periods.

Illini safety Carooq Taylor was ejected from the game after the last foul. "This is my most exciting moment," said Noel. "It's something I'll remember all my life." Wilson tossed a pair of touchdown including one with about a minute left in the game, but Minnesota picked up an on-side kick and held on to the ball until time ran out. Marion Barber and Garry White, Minnesota's hard-running duo, scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter.

The Illini cut Minnesota's 14-point lead to four after a touchdown pass from Wilson to Greg Dentino in the second quarter and Bass' field goal in the fourth quarter. However, Noel followed Bass' field goal with the long touchdown run, and Illinois' next scoring drive ended when Minnesota intercepted a Wilson pass in the end zone. Wilson moved his team down the field one more time, trailing 21-10, and hit Greg Boeke with the final, 5-yard scoring pass, and added a two-point conversion. "We just didn't execute (on offense)," said Illinois coach Mike White. "In every offense, you need a balanced attack.
