Friday September 15 2006 LOCALONTARIO 4 THE NORTH bay nugget NDP beat Grits in key byelection Toronto riding loss could set tone for 2007 provincial vote experts TORONTO (CP) Voters in west Toronto rejected governing Liberals Thursday in a byelection that some experts said could set the tone for next provincewide vote After a tough campaign marked by accusations of mudslinging and smearing New Democrat Cheri DiNovo emerged victorious Thursday night in the Parkdale-High Park vote winning 41 per cent of the vote Liberal Sylvia Watson took 33 per cent of the vote while Conservative David Hutcheon won 17 per cent in the byelection called to replace former education minister Gerard Kennedy who resigned to seek the federal Liberal leadership The quiet campaign took on a nasty tone in its final days The Liberals released selected portions of past sermons to claim she was sympathetic to Karla Homolka and supported the ordination of pedophiles and axe-murderers Another Liberal release from campaign urged DiNovo to about remarks she made in the past including one where she admitted to smuggling LSD from California in hollowed-out Bibles is nothing I would have changed about this Watson told supporters in her concession speech did everything we could have When asked later why she lost she said: think have to ask the voters Finance Minister Greg Sorbara told the crowd famous politicians like Rene Levesque lost many byelections before winning even more seats in subsequent general elections 'Broken' Although he said his heart was little bit broken Sorbara said the victory in next provincewide election will Education Minister Sandra Pupatel-lo who accused DiNovo of comparing media coverage of Karla release from prison to the persecution of Jesus Christ said she surprised by the result historically are always an anti-vote always easier to get an anti-vote Pupatello said She also apologize for the allegations about DiNovo but said if she could she would only about health care and DiNovo revelled in her win Thursday night sporting a bright NDP orange scarf and entering her victory party to Stevie Higher Ground I hope this shows to the people of Ontario is that you can run an ethical campaign You can run on the issues and you can said DiNovo who defended herself throughout the campaign as someone who had gone from a 15-year-old street kid to a United Church minister The byelection was hard-fought by all parties especially the Liberals who had no less than a dozen cabinet ministers in the riding in the last week since many believe it would colour the result of the general election next October Although the Liberals won the riding by one of the highest margins in the province in 2003 some experts speculated the seat could be taken by the NDP Privately the Liberals had been trying to lower expectations by calling it a traditional NDP stronghold and saying Kennedy held the seat on the strength of his personal popularity Country Roads Studio
