REPORT QUAKE ROME (Reuter) A violent earthquake occurred Wednesday night in the Tyrrhenian Sea about 320 kilometres off Italy's west coast, observatories at Prato and Messina reported Thursday. The earthquake registered about eight on the Mercalli Scale. There were no reports of damage on the Italian peninsula. SPORTSMAN MOSCOW (Reuter) World chess champion Anatoly Karpov has been named the Soviet Union sportsman of the year in the annual poll of the Federation of Soviet Sports Journalists, the news agency Tass reported Thursday. Karpov, 27, successfully defended his world title in Manila this year against Soviet defector Viktor Korchnoi.

CANDIDATE QUITS TORONTO (CP) Alderman Tom Clifford says he has resigned as federal Progressive Conservative candidate in the Broadview riding. Clifford lost the riding in an October byelection to Bob Rae, the New Democratic Party candidate. He was re-elected alderman in Ward 8 on Nov. 13. Clifford said he wants to serve his term as alder- man.

EXECUTED BAGHDAD (AFP) Eighteen people, sentenced to death in Sudan's White Nile province for having provoked bloody disorders in July, have been executed, the Iraqi news agency reported in a dispatch from Khartoum.
