824-3t GobtNsWrBOM thb Ahmt. We had the Pleasure of severely shaking Col. Monroe's hind a few days since on the platform at the Essex House. Me brought home with him Utween $10,000 and $10,000, from companies and of the 123d regiment, the Ratings of a number of the boys of those companies for several months past This money, which will be distributed at the Firemen's Hall on Monday next, will give great relief to the families of our volunteers. Bold Robbery.

Four panes of the south window of the Post-Office budding were broken out on Thursday night last, through which some bold rascal entered and robbed Mr. Chas. Smith, who keeps a Stationery, Jewelry and Notion Store in the same building, of a large amount of valuable articles, cutlery, jewelry, ic, amounting altogether, Mr. S. informs us, to about $3C0 worth.

The loss falls heavy upon Charley, and would have been much heavier had he not taken some of the most valuable of his watches, Hold pens, knives, Ac, home with him that night. Deserters. Several doterter9 from Col. Monroe's regiment have been arrested within a few days past, and taken back to the army. Most of them were from Capt.

Talbott's company from Cumberland county. 2d Lieut. Concert, was among the arrested, he having basely deserted, sold his uniform, and sneaked back to Greenup, where he was skulking around when taken. We are informed that he, at least, will be court martinllcd and the extreme penalty of death executed upon him, he had much to do in encouraging others in regiment to desert. This is the first war in the history of civilized nations in which deserters were not punished with death.

Kindnes of heart has been the pi in cipal difficulty with our chief Executive from the beginning of the rebellion, but we have no doubt that whatever his feelings are, he now sees on account of the increasing number of tha necessity of prompt punishment of this most cowardly of all mil- itarv crimes, and will hereafter take to shoot-. ing deserters.
