Gossett, and a committee of ladies entirely competent to make (He evening's entertainment pleasant. Local Intebests We hve frequently been asked why we did not buy our'goods in Terre IlWite, or some larger pltce, instead of spending our money with local business houses from which we get no support. Our reply is that we hare identified ourselves with the people of Mattoon, and are willing, for the sake of supporting home interests, to make the sacrifice, if it can bo called a sacrifice, of the few cents difference in prices, for the advantage of keeping up a unity of interest in the place. Every man who lives in a particular locality should know that his prosperity depends upon the prosperity of that locality, and thit every effort he makes to sustain the business of that locality will be a benefit to him. The crazy disposition of some to run to a city to buy goods at retail is inexcusable foolishness, for, generally, there is but little difference in prices, and any thinking man see that when the money is spent with Cinminoium Craig, or Fraxcis Shaw, or other of our prominent merchants at home, assists them in building up a business so large that they can well afford to compete with city prices.

Our readers will be glad to learn that a Cemetery has at last been established in the suburbs of our place. It is located pear the north-west line of "tic city limits, and contains ten acres of the highest land in the vicinilv, appropi islcly laid off and fenced in. 'I ho Cily I hols" arc entitled to the thanks of ever)' citizen interested in the welfare of the place, for their earnest endeavors to establish a decent spot for the burial of our dead. We need not now fear to die because we would be stuck in a hole dug in some corn field in the neighborhood. Every citizen, resident, should buy a lot, in the new ground, and immediately improve it, according to ordinance.

Mfr mmm Fi.oiuixii Mii.i.s. Two verv commodious steam mills are being erected, one in the west part of town by Mr. C. C. Jones, anil the other in the east by a Cincinnati firm, we understand.

The Jones' mill is to have four Bets of burrs, and tho other three, which Itngthet will add very matiiially to the business interests of the place. The Grain Traiie is increasing steadily in this locality "in spite" of the hard times. The number of largo houses in this business would astonish thoso abroad who arc not acquainted with tho business of the place. John- Cinninoiiam has a large brick warehouse on the Illinois Central, with steam power, elevators and power shellers. II.

A. Carter also has a first-rato steam establishment on tho same road. The Jones' warehouse, on tho St. Louis A T. II.

road is not only commodious, but is well arranged, with improved machinery for saving labor. Mr. Jennings has been doing a very respectable business in the same line, although ho docs not run his sheller by steam. Hut all theso facilities for shipping were not great enough for tho supply, and consequently Mr. Lee Oiam fonnd it advisable to build another large and much improved warehouse.

Thia establishment is in tho east end of town, and when completed, will be one of the best in the country. These large shipping houses have generally done a good business, nd we anticipate a great increase in tho future. wanted at this oflicc on eubacriptiou and ndvcrlibing.
