Direotora. i A Carious Affair. Two weeks 9go there appeared in all the city papers a notice that the board of directors of this school district would meet In the council chamber on Monday night. May 13, and inviting the attendance of the citizens who were interested in good school matters for a general discussion of ways and means to provide motechool Monday night came, and the board came, but the citizens did not. The board thenconcludedtoadjourn until the 20th, and to excite the Interest of the people published in all the city papers a statement a column in length setting the needs of the school arid the number of pupils in attendance in eaca room, it was supposed that this would bring them out, as the average tax-payer opens his ejes and ears when money is to be paid out.

But last Monday night, at the ad journed meeting, just two Mattoon peo ple met with the board, Miss Maria Noyes and Mr. J. G. Wright. It was the writer's intention to be present but he was absent from the city.

So much by way of introduction. That our citizens may realize the present existing state of affairs we re print the following estimated attend ance at the different school rooms in this city, the table being the one which appeared last week: High Uehool 6S Central school. 8th arade 54 Central aehool, 7th (trade Ontral Rchool, Central school, 5th grade 1W Central tohool, lt 50. North school, 4th gmde North soboul, Sd grade North school, id North school, lot B8 Booth school, 4t Krude 54 Booth school, Xd grade Honth school, 2d grade 51 Mouth urulf 5(1 West tchool. 4th grade Si West school.

7th grade in one 33 West school, St grade! room 40 75 West school, Sth 54 West school, 4th grade 4A West school, td grade West school, 21 grade 64 Westschool, Ut grade 150 A careful study of the above figures, shows a condition of affairs unparalleled In the school history of the city. In the Sth grade. Central building, there are 109 pupils when the room has only seating capacity for CO, while every other room is crowded to such an extent that neither teacher or pupil can reap a third of the reward essential to the careful conduct ot a school. With this end in view the school board, before taking any steps to remedy the difficulty, asked that the citizens meet with them and dlBcuss the question. But as above stated, Just two appeared.

Now, after having given the public an opportunity to join with them In the solution of this problem, and it having failed to put in an appearance, the Gazette is of the opinion that it is the duty of the board to go ahead without any further discus sion and put in motion the machinery which wilt give suitable facilities, it nas Deen ror years conceded that a teacher to give her pupils the proper attention must not have to exceed 40, and when it is seen that with but oue ex ception this number is exceeded in every room in the city, and in one case reach ing 109, the question assumes a pertl nence bard to banish. Something must be done and that very promptly, or the lower grades will receive an Injury it will take years to repair. Therefore, in view of the public indifference to the matter, it is the duty of the school board to go aneaa ana let tne public cuss afterwards. A case ot misdirected energy in the cause of his employer is reported from Doran's Crossing.

A strip of land In that vicinity belonging to the Illinois Central railroad company was leased to a "farmer. The latter had the ground nearly broken up when his horses were taken sick and he was com pelled to knock off work for a few days. The section foreman did not think work on the land was being pushed sufficient ly and once notified the tenant that unless he went to work he would get another man on the place. The tenant replied that as toon as his team got strong he would resume operations, but usual. The rooms, however, need a thorough and complete overhauling.

They are dingy in the extreme; the windows are dirty, hardly two curtains in a room are of the same color, the stoves are as innocent of blacking as a white babe of unquestionable Caucasian nativity, while the cracks in the plaster are as numerous as the cows in Mattoon. New desks are needed for the teachers and those of the pupils would be greatly Improved by or three coats of Coit's buggy paint It Is to be hoped that during the summer vacation a complete innovation made. and we believe all parties will be benefitted thereby; If any of our read eri- doubt' those statements let them Medicine-AllI the Tellable kinds sold la this market can be found at WEAVER'S Prog Store. Monday the Charleston waterworks again became clogged up, and an In vestigation revealed another- large cat fish lodged in the supply pipe from the river. It was wedged in so tight that its removal whole was impossible, and a sharp knife was procured and the work of cutting itout were commenced.

Piece after piece was taken away until several tubs full was obtained, and then out of curiosity the debris was weighed. Tbe scales tipped the beam at 40 pounds, and the reputation of' the Charleston water-works as a disseminator of catfish broth was fully sustained. The pieces were divided between the Charles ton editors. The Gazette did for a time question tbe wisdom of voting li cense in that poor old village, but in view of the recent revelations it was a very wise act. There are but few people who would not prefer a good glass of nice, cool, foamy beer to one of muddy river water which, has been strained through the gills of a cat-fish.

Charleston's city council should change Its municipal seal so that a cat-fish rampant will occupy a prominent position. Then it will keep company with Mat-toon's town cow. Shut up the cat-fish. A Mattoon editor asks his realers to excuse lack of editorial matter by explaining that "he is now lying in bed. with one foot In the grave while four of the bestphysiciansof the town surround his couch and sew up the gaping wounds which disfigure us He fell over a cow which was lying on the sidewalk. -Shel- by vine union. This is a malicious misstatement. The editor did not fall over a cow, because the firt training a Mattoon child receives is to such accidents, The truth is, that he was trying to hold down a stream of natural gas from a newly discovered well and was blown up about 100 feet.

The subsequent fall was the cause of his injuries. Since Charleston's water-works have become comparatively useless from the habit forty-pound cat-fishes have of crawling up into the mains, as a substitute for river water the following item from Wednesday's Indianapolis Journal is respectfully submitted: Mr.

I. N. Meredith, of Monticelle.has just been tapped for dropsy the seventy-eighth time by Dr. Caldwell, who removed 171 pounds of water from him. ills is the most remarkable case on record.

It will be seen seen by the follow ing from the Danville Commercial that Dr. Wilcox, who has just been appointed U. S. revenue collector, has a pretty good lot of plums to give out. They are as follows: Chief deputy collector.

Mattoon has nine saloons. It will require more than one state Sunday school convention to redeem that city. Tuscola Journal. Mattoon has fewer saloons per capita than any other city In the state, and runs them better. But what's tbe use of bringing the Sunday school conven tion into proximity with saloons way? The editor of the Tuscola Journal ought to have more sense.

Fruit growers at Mattoon estimate the damage by frost to small fruit at about $10,000. The long continued drouth had a very bad effect on growing crops. Tuscola Republican. Come off, will you.
