C2 THE PANTAGRAPH. Friday. July 26. 1985 DEATHS HEALTH Murder for hire draws 40 years for Logan man Lavem Kitzsch Carolyn Robbins agreed to kill a stranger for a relatively small amount of money. Testimony throughout the two-day bench trial supported claims that Staake's wife, Brenda, 32, also of Riverton, allegedly made arrangements with Miller to have her husband killed.

She provided Miller with a gun and bullets, and agreed to pay Miller between $7,000 and $9,000 for the murder, according to testimony. Miller allegedly received about $1,375 before he and Mrs. Staake were charged with Staake's murder. In handing down the 40-year sentence, Judge Rhodes disagreed with both prosecution arguments. Mrs.

Staake allegedly wanted her husband dead because he beat and sexually assaulted her and also beat the couple's children, according to testimony. Mrs. Staake is charged with three counts of murder and one count of solicitation to commit murder. She is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 23.

Staake was found shot to death at 1245 a.m. last Aug. 29 on the Spaulding-Williamsville Blacktop, about 10 miles south of the Logan County line. By MELINDA DoVRIES Pantagraph stall SPRINGFIELD A 53-year-old Logan County man, convicted last month of killing a Riverton man for money, was sentenced to 40 years in prison yesterday in Sangamon County Circuit Court. Raymond Miller of Elkhart was sentenced by Circuit Judge Jerry Rhodes the same judge who found Miller guilty of three counts of murder in connection with the August 1984 death of Bruce Staake, 31.

During the first phase of the sentencing hearing, prosecutors asked that Miller be sentenced to death because state statutes allow the death penalty in cases involving murder for hire. A second recommendation from the state asked that Miller receive natural life in prison a sentence possible only if it is proven the murder was brutal or heinous. Defense attorneys asked Rhodes to impose a 20-year sentence the minimum allowed by law. Assistant State's Attorney John Michelich said the state argued the Staake murder met the brutal or heinous definition because Miller EDUCATION Zeta Tau chairman Gail McClain Kendrick has been appointed as chairman of the Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity's national financial committee.
