Movies Now Possible: Mirrors Used BALTIMORE (AP) A Johns Hopkins scientist has souped up the old X-ray to a point where he can make movie stars out of the butterflies in your stomach. The results could be a boon to medical research. The new apparatus produces X- ray motion 1 pictures. Its creator is Dr. Russell Morgan, professor of radiology at the Hopkins Medical School and radiologistchief of the Hopkins Hospital.

He and his assistant, R. E. Sturm, have received the gold medal of the American Roentgen Ray Society for the achievement. Their brain-child consists of an X-ray image, a few mirrors, 8 television pick-up tube, a mechanism which brightens the television picture, and a movie camera. Its operation is explained in the Johns Hopkins Magazine, monthly magazine of the school and hospital.

The patient lies on a stretcher, beneath which is placed the usual fluoroscopic X-ray generator. The X-ray picture is taken, then fed by mirrors into the television tube, where it is broken down into electrical impulses. These impulses are amplified thousands of times before being converted back into a picture on the television screen. The amplification is so great that the television picture is bright enough to be photographed again by a movie camera. The device overcomes several a obstacles which normally prevent doctors from making prolonged visual studies of what goes on Inside the body.

Ordinarily they would have to settle for a long look at the patient behind a fluoroscope or a look at a short sequence of X- it ray photos. Morgan's pictures can be made to 50,000 times as bright as the up standard fluoroscope photo. And they can be taken easily for 15 minutes, compared with the maximum three-second exposure possible with X-ray sequence photographs. Battersea BATTERSEA Mrs. Frank Lake has been with Mrs.
