Only 1 in House seeks leac leadership SPRINGFIELD (UPI) The number of candidates for president of the Illinois Senate has grown to five but the House speakership race so far has only one announced candidate. Those numbers are almost reversed from two years ago, when Sen. Cecil Partee, D-Chicago, became Senate president without opposition and Rep. William Redmond, D-Bensenville, narrowly won the House speaker's race after an historic 93 ballots. When both houses meet next Wednesday to pick their leaders, Senate members will consider at least five candidates for their top post.

Representatives, who had more than a half-dozen candidates in 1975, have only one candidate so far this However, number of legislators running for the two seats probably will increase when the actual balloting begins. Democrats, the majority party in each chamber, are scheduled to meet Tuesday to select their nominees for each of the top spots, but the battle for party nominees is expected to go to the floor. Republicans in both houses have already announced their leaders. The latest candidates seeking the Senate president's seat are Chicago Democrats Howard Carroll and Thomas Hynes. Carroll said he has not formally announced his candidacy, but is seeking to replace Partee, who gave up his Senate seat to run for attorney general last November.

Already announced candidates for the president's post include Sen. Terry Bruce, D-Olney; Rep.
