Frazier, 53, is a former major leaguer who played four big league seasons with the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. Coincidentally, his appointment comes just three days after his better-known namesake was beaten by Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight boxing championships.

Frazier had a 10-year minor league managerial career during which time he won five championships, the latest of which was the International League title at Tidewater this season. Chamberlain, who has not played in two years, sat out his option year with the Lakers. He later coached the San Diego Conquistadors in the American Basketball Association. Under NBA rules, a player must play out his option year rather than sit it out as Chamberlain did. It appears, however, that Laker owner Jack Kent Cooke is not interested in having Chamberlain play for the Lakers and the Lakers have warned Chamberlain to stav away from their camp or risk being "embarassed." The Lakers continue to own the rights to Chamberlain under the heavily criticized NBA option clause but have refuse to pay him his $450,000 salary that was in effect under the contract.

O'Brien ruled late Thursday that Chamberlain is still under contract to the Lakers. If Chamberlain decides to report to the Lakers camp, continued, the Lakers must live up to their end of the contract. If the two sides failed to reach an agreement among themselves, O'Brien indicated he would step in and review the situation. The New York Knicks have shown interest in signing Chamberlain but have been unable to reach an agreement with Los Angeles. The Knicks have offered to buy the rights to Chambelain but Cooke refuses to accept cash, wanting draft choices and players instead.

The Oakland first baseman reinjured his thumb last Sunday and has been unable to practice all week. Rudi made the trip to Boston but was considered doubtful for the game. If Rudi is sidelined, Gene Tenace will move from catcher to first base and Ray Fosse will catch. Boston has had to make a similar adjustment because of the loss of rtKikie left fielder Jim Rice.

Carl Yastrzemski, a 15-year veteran who switched from outfield to first base a couple of years ago, will start in left field. Cecil Cooper, the regular designated hitter, will play first and Juan Beniquez will be the DH as long as the go with lefthanded pitchers.
