The contract still await? formal approval by the county board of education. Officials of the Curlew school board. President Harry Matthiesen and Secretary Lloyd Seagren said their district will also drop the $25,000 bond issue approved by district voters last February. Money from the bonds was to have been used for a new farm shop, hot lunch facilities, and bus barn. Matthiesen said that with the closing of the Curlew High school its five fulltime teachers would be given teaching positions in the junior high school and grade schools which will continue to operate. Two part-time teachers in the high school had asked for a release prior to the contract being signed. Curlew students attending the Emmetsburg High school, Mattiesen said, will be transported free to the school under contractual arrangements. The Curlew district is one oi three involved in the proposed Mallard school reorganization. The election on the reorganization plan will be held Thursday. Dec. 8, in the Mallard and Curlew districts and part of the Ellington township rural district. If the new plan is approved the Curlew district will be reduced from its present 16 sections of land to about eight. The Curlew board had contended in the Palo Alto county district court that Iowa law prevented any district being reduced below a minimum of 16 sections. Judge G. W. Stillman of Algona had ruled in the court that a district could be reduced to less than 16 sections and the state supreme court affirmed the decision. The Curlew district, being left with eight sections, will still have over the minimum number of 4 sections required by state! law to operate a school. Petitions Seek Shortcut Paving Via 18 To 43-44 Petitions were to be placed in circulation this week in Palo Alto county for blacktoppmg or otherwise hardsurfacing a shortcut between U.S. 18 east of Emmetsburg and Iowa 43 or 44 east of Ringsted, by way of Di-pi-w. The petition, originatini; in the Depew community, will sav: To The Honorable Palo Alto Board of Supervisor?, To The Honorable Stale Ilifth- w a y C orn m i ss i o n: We. the undersigned residents of Palo Alto county respectfully ask and strongly urge the paving of the road that connects U.S. highway 18 with highways 43 or 44 by way of Depew. When a check was taken prior to the Rodman paving project. tht> Depew road showed a count of 269 vehicles in eight hours while the Rodman road showed half that number. WE THINK IT IS OUR TURN NOW! Rodman, Curlew and Ayrshire have their pavement into town. Depew would like theirs to go beyond its present point and complete the long wanted ana long-delayed hardsurfaced shortcut to the Twin Cities, first proposed in 1943. DIES Manchester lost one of its oldest residents last month in the death of Mrs Lura Smith. 97. She- had been a resident of that city for over 80 years. NEED PRINTING?
