Friday, November 21, 1947 DENTON JOURNAL, DENTON, MARYLAND membraneous croup, aged 8 years, 3 months and 9 days. Funeral services were' held at the grave at 2 o'clock, Saturday afternoon. Interment was in Hopkins cemetery. Mr. John W.

Henry, of New York City, formerly of Ellwood, Dorchester county, died suddenly on Wednesday night. He will be buried at o'- 25 Years Ago NEWS ITEMS TAKEN From The Journal Of 25 Years Ago This Week Mr. Emmett Dowries, at one time a prominent business man of Denton, died at his home in California on October 31st. Mr. Dovvnes left Denton for the West more than thirty years ago.

He has a number of relatives in this section. Little Levenia Warren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R.

Warren, Whiteleysburg, died suddenly at'5 o'clock cl ck this (Saturday) morning, with Friday morning. November .3. of 'funeral servicies at the home of Col- onel A. W. Sisk, at Preston.

Mr Henry is survived by his widow, for' merly Miss Ella Fletcher, a sister of Mrs. Sisk, and one son, Mr. J. Talbot Henry, of New York. A woods fire near Williston on 'Monday evening destroyed several acres of timber and threatened a vastly larger acreage.

Farmers fought the flames valiantly and finally subdued them, after members oif the Denton fire company had been summoned and had responded. The fact that the fire was practically under control when the Denton fire fighters arrived does not detract from the spirit of willingness exhibited them in the alacrity with which they answered the summons. Mrs. widow of the late John Anthony, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Jones, on November 6th; aged 76 years.

She is survived by three children--Wade Anthony, of Queen Anne; Harry F. Anthony, of'Alberton, and Mrs. William Jones, Denton, with whom she had made her home since the death-of her husband "on September 10, 1905. Funeral 'was held at the Holiness Mission on Thursday morning, the 9th, Rev. G.

and Mrs. John Poole, of near Preston, and Mr. M. Burdette Thomas, of Newark, Delaware, were quietly married on Saturday evening, November 4th, at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in Denton. The pastor, Rev.

In honor of the bride and groom, refreshments were served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Poole, in Denton.

Mr. Henry Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Dentom and Miss Margaret Grady Bynum, of Jacksonville, Florida, were married in the latter city on October 23rd.

Mr. Wilson in engaged in State road work in- Florida and is at present building a road forty-five miles long. Before going South he was employed in the Department of Highways of Baltimore city. Mr. and Mrs.

William Singer and sons, Wesley and Edward, of Philadelphia; Mr. and Mrs. Christian Singer, of Viola, and Miss Mary Wiggins, of Denton, spent Sunday with. Mr. and Mrs.

John Singer and family, near Greerisboro. The annual meeting-of the Williston Community Club was held on Friday, the 10th at the home of Mrs. Gilbert Hignutt. There being many Items of business connected with 'the Exhibit the Federation to discuss, it was a late hour when the meeting adjourned. Besides, there was election of officers for the ensuring year.

Mrs. Cooper, president; Mrs. Harker, first vice- president, and Mrs. Hignutt treasur-' er. were unanimously re-elected, with Mrs.

Edith Depew as second vice-! president. There having been candidates for each of the following! offices, balloting was necessary, which resulted in the selection of Mrs. O. M. Hignutt as director; Mrs.

W. C. Beckwith as secretary, and Mrs. liam Willoughby as librarian. New business, which received most inter-' esting discussion, was the club fostering of the three schools, Williamson, Williston and Howard's.

This u-ork was recommended by the chairman of education and the president of the Federation of Clubs. As Williston's representative member of the Educational Committee, the Club ashed Mrs. Beckwith to take the position temporarily, to be assisted by Mrs. Gail Cooper. There were several new members added to the roll.

It was deemed advisable that the club meet twice monthly for a few months, and accepted Mrs. Beckwith's invitation to meet at her home the fourth Friday of each month designated, leaving the second Friday meeting, as always, to be held at the various homes of the members. The hostess served the most delicious refreshments, and the club voted the meeting exceedingly good and very enjoyable. Mr. James A.

Stephens, a well- known farmer of near Burrsville. was PAGE ELEVEN very dangerously, 'if not fatally, shot while coming to Denton with a load of wood yesterday morning. He had nearly reached the town limits when he met Edward Mitchell, a young man out gunning. In some manner-probably when the young man tried to get on the wagon--the gun Mitchell was carrying Was discharged and the load went into Mr. Stephens' back and head.

The injured man was taken into the home of Mr. Roy Davis, in front of whose property the accident occurred, and medical assistance was hastily summoned. Drs. Nichols and Page were soon in attendance and they ordered the patient taken to Easton Hospital, whither he was rushed in an automobile.
