It is actually the fourth year in succession that the senior from Downs (Tri-Valley) has been the most valuable runner as a collegian. He gained the honor twice at Danville Junior College. He was co-captain of the Titans this year along with John Fetcho of Peoria (Central).

Elected co-captains for 1979 were sophomores Doug Carlson of Decatur (MacArthur) and Randy Sharer of Prophetstown. Joining Roberts, Fetcho, Carlson and Sharer as letter winners were senior Brian Koopmans of Herscher, sophomores Bruce Giles of Herscher and John Zuelsdorf of Waterford, Wis. (Union) and freshman Dave Bangert of Princeton. "There was no question in anyone's mind about Roberts being our most valuable runner," Coach Les Myers said. "It is quite a feat to lead your team in every meet." Roberts finished his collegiate career by placing 14th in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet in the time of 26 minutes 1 second, which was 50 seconds better than his previous best, Tennis prizes soar NEW YORK (AP) Prize money for women's professional tournament tennis will reach a record $7.5 million in 1979.

and taking 141st place in a 430-runner field in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics meet. His time of 27 minutes there, Myers said, represented Roberts' best effort because of the difficulty of the course ferman, but a heavy classroom schedule limited his work this year and he never reached the form of his previous seasons. He was stronger at the end of the year, however, and was the team's best finisher in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin meet. The Titans had a 2-2 record in dual meets, won the Judson Invitational, were third in three large meets, fifth in the CCIW and 37th in the NAIA national meet. and the muddy, cold and windy conditions.

"Carlson and Sharer will be good co-captains," Myers said. "They worked out together and ran together a lot in the meets. They are both very dedicated and will set good examples. "The team did well. I enjoyed the season and learned a lot from them.

I think they made good strides. "I feel they can be a good team next year although they lose their top two runners." Fetcho was the team's second finisher in five of the last six meets after being below par physically early in the season. Earning a National Football League wild-card playoff berth (if not the National Conference East title) was, it seemed, merely a formality. Then they hit the skids, losing seven of nine games and turning a sure thing into a nail-biter.

Even if they win, their chances of picking up one of the two available wild cards is a slender one. They'll need a lot of help on Sunday. It will take a loss by Philadelphia and the Eagles are favored to beat the New York Giants. And a loss by either Minnesota or Green Bay. The Vikings play Oakland and the Packers face Los Angeles.

"The players realize what's happen-. ing," says Jack Pardee, the Redskins' first-year head coach. "And even if we're not in the playoffs, there's still a big difference between a 9-7 season and an 8-8 season." Pittsburgh visits Denver in another 1 NFL game today. SuperSonics sign Lars Hansen as Sikma backup SEATTLE (AP) The Seattle SuperSonics announced Friday that they have signed former University of Washington center Lars Hansen to a 10-day contract. Hansen was drafted in 1976 in the third round by the Chicago Bulls and since has played two years in Italy.

The Sonics said the 6-foot-10 Hansen will be used to spell Jack Sikma for 10 to 15 minutes a game. Hansen has been working out with the team for a few days but because he is a Canadian citizen, he needed a work permit in order to play. "He has to get in better shape," said Coach Lenny Wilkens. "But he is an aggressive kid who rebounds well and reads the offense well." No charges yef in Arkansas case FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Deputy prosecutor Kim Smith of Fayetteville says he will decide Monday whether to file charges over a coed's complaint that she was raped in the University of Arkansas athletic dormitory.

Two Arkansas football players have been suspended from school pending completion of the investigation. Sources have told The Associated Press that Donny Bobo and Micheal Forrest were suspended Wednesday. No charge has been filed. Smith said Friday that he had not made a decision on whether to file charges because "there are more people we want to talk to." Smith said he had interviewed six or seven persons about the case. "When you interview people, somebody else's name will pop up," Smith said.

"Like any other investigation, we want to do it thoroughly." He refused to comment when asked if he had interviewed Bobo or Forrest. "On Monday we will make a decision, one way or another," he said. The school has not identified the suspended students because it is prohibited from doing so, university officials said Thursday. Bill Hughes, Arkansas' director of information, said the university would not have any other statement until after Smith announces his decision. Leaving the season the same way would be even more satisfying. Nothing but pride and maybe a bit more assurance that they'll be on next year's roster is at stake for the Bears, who staggered through an eight-game losing streak midway in the season and take a 6-9 record into today's game in Washington. But for the Redskins the game means survival. Six weeks into the season the Redskins Principles goad him, says Knight BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Bobby Knight wants to forget the past and look to the future, but he said that his dismissal of three players from the Indiana University basketball team this week was a matter of principle that he would repeat.

"I'm just tired of thinking about it and talking about it," said Knight, who sends his Hoosiers against defending NCAA champion Kentucky here this afternoon. Knight dismissed senior Jim Rob-erson, sophomore Tommy Baker and sophomore Don Cox from the team and placed five other players on probation. Neither he nor any other university official would give the reason for the action, but Roberson has said it concerned the use of marijuana. "I've always felt that I could withstand things pretty well, but this eats one like any disappointing thing eats on a person," said Knight, who had been silent on the matter all week. "You just can't really understand unless you've had kids and have been disappointed with them.

"I'll tell you what I think, and this sounds egotistical as hell, but I'm the only SOB coaching today who will stand up and do something. If I had to, I'd kick three off next year, and three the next year, and three the next, if it was a matter of principle." Knight said the five players on probation would play today as if nothing had happened. DeAtley to head district softball Frank DeAtley, athletic director for the Bloomington Parks Recreation Department, has been appointed district commissioner for the Amateur Softball Association. He will be responsible for men's and women's slowpitch softball in the Bloomington-Normal area and for registration of umpires. Three regional tournaments will be held, next summer that could lead an area team into the ASA world series.

The men's Class A and Class AA slowpitch tournament and women's slowpitch tournament will be handled by DeAtley. The district commissioner, 24, has been with the Bloomington department since last July. He previously worked for similar programs in Galesburg and Champaign.
