06 THE PANTAGRAPH, MONDAY, NOV. 28, 1983 LSU says Stovc.ll still coach very fine place and that that its football program is nationally re- nowned." Brodhead joined LSU in early 1982 from the Dolphins' front of-! fice, where he worked as director! of finance. He replaced Paul; Dietzel, who was forced out of the; athletic director's job and quit af-j ter being reassigned to never-speci-! fied administrative duties. Relations between Brodhead and! Stovall have been cool at best dur-; ing their two seasons together. i I Arnsparger, a colleague of; Brodhead's at Miami, has said "I'd' be interested" in the LSU coach's! job.

In his four years at LSU, Stovall has gone 22-21-2, 4-7 this season.

His career was crowned last season by a 8-3-1 season that ended with the Tigers ranked 11th after a 21-20 Orange Bowl loss to Nebraska. His 1982 performance earned him the Walter Camp Foundation National Coach of the Year honor and selection as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. After finishing second in the SEC last year, the Tigers have gone 0-6 in league play this season for the first time in the conference's 51-year history. While Brodhead freely admits he's been shopping around for a new coach, he refused to say what his recommendation to the board will be. He said only that he's been doing "homework in case something does happen." Speculation has been running high that Stovall will be fired by the board Friday at Brodhead's recommendation.

Last week, Edwin Edwards offered to set up a $1 million trust fund to help pay the salary of a new coach if Stovall is replaced. Edwards stressed that he wasn't taking a position one way or the other on the issue, but only wanted to make sure the university didn't find itself financially strapped if it decided to pay off Stovall's $70,000 salary and fringe benefits valued at an additional $180,000. Although Arnsparger has been most frequently mentioned as a successor to Stovall, Brodhead said he has settled on no favorite. "Actually, no one is at the head of the list," he said. "I think we found that people think LSU is a EASTERN AIRLINES CAMEL GT BATON ROUGE, La.

(AP) Louisiana State University Athletic Director Bob Brodhead denied a report that he has offered Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Bill Arnsparger the Tiger head football coach's job now held by Jerry Stovall. Television station WBRZ quoted unnamed sources Saturday night as saying Brodhead has offered Arnsparger the job and given him until early this week to accept. Brodhead denied the report in a telephone interview from his home yesterday. "I've talked to Bill Arnsparger, and I've talked to several other coaches," he said. "But nothing been offered to anyone because we still have a head coach." Arnsparger could not be reached for comment.

Trickle completed 300 laps on the half-mile oval track in just over 2 hours, 23 minutes to capture the $50,000 first place prize. He was followed in order by Mike Eddy, Bob Senneker, Jim Sauter, Gary Balough. Rounding out the top 10 were Gene Morgan, Ronnie Sanders, Jody Ridley, Mark Martin and Freddy Fryar.

Speer, who co-drove a Buick-powered March 84G with Ken Madren to sixth place, passed the struggling Foyt in points earned here this year and won the inaugural Daytona Cup and the $10,000 that goes with it.

There were three full-course caution flags, all of them brought out in order to clean- debris from the track. There were no serious accidents and no injuries. The opening race of the 1984 IMSA Camel GT season will be-on this same track. The Daytona" 24 Hours will be run Feb. 4-5.

(AP) Series champion Al Holbert and co-driver Jim Trueman combined yesterday to win the Eastern Airlines 3-Hour IMSA Camel GT sports car race at Daytona International Speedway. Trueman started the Porsche-powered March 83G prototype and Holbert got in the driver's seat for the final 90 minutes, driving it under the checkered flag on the 90th and last time around the 3.84-mile road course. The winners completed 345.60 miles, averaging 115.562 mph. They will share first-place money of about $20,000.

It was the seventh victory of the season for Holbert, who said in Victory Circle, "We were a little anxious at times during the day, Game winning ticket correctly, you could win an extra bag full of money and find out! Your chances of winning big money are better than ever. You 1" 1I Trl va but we had a superior car and a superior crew and things came out all right." The Porsche Turbo 935 co-driven by Bob Akin and John O'Steen finished second, a distant 1 minute, 49.970 seconds behind the winner. That was was followed a lap behind by a Chevrolet-powered Lola T-600 co-driven by John Kalagian and John Lloyd. Fourth was the Chevrolet-March 83G co-driven by Kenper Miller and David Cowart. Tico Almeida and Miguel Morejon were fifth in a turbocharged 935.

A.J. Foyt, who was trying to become the first driver ever to co-drive to victories in each of the three sports car races at Daytona in a single season, saw his hopes end on lap 10 when his fuel injection could win $10,000, $15,000, $25,000, $50,000 or as much as $100,000. Houston scored on a 1-yard run by Donald Jordan in the second quarter, but Myers' extra point attempt was blocked and it was 7-6. That was the closest the Cougars came.

The Mustangs came right back with an an 80-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Mcllhenny to wide receiver Ron Morris. After SMU safety Russell Carter intercepted a Landry pass at mid-field six minutes before the end of the half, Jeff Harrel kicked a 28-yard field goal to make it 17-6. The interception was Carter's 18th of his career, an SMU record. SMU went ahead 243 after Houston fullback Dwayne Love fumbled on his own 15. Dupard scored from 1 yard out with one minute left, boosting SMU's lead at halftime to 243.

For Houston, 4-7, it was a case of statistics being for losers. Coach Bill Yeoman said that was readily explainable you can't get too far behind too soon against sixth-ranked Southern Methodist. While SMU gained only 10 more yards, 316, to 306 from Houston and time of posession was just about even, the game was nowhere near that close. fcf-aij uina uv How would you react if you found out you'd just won a MoneyBag worth If you fill out the back of your $25, $50 or $100 MoneyBags Instant qualified to win the Million Dollar Grand Prize. "I think our defense is as good a defense as I've ever been around," he said after SMU topped Houston 34-12 in the Mirage Bowl yesterday to run its record to 10-1. The Mustangs forcing a series of turnovers in the second quarter to break the game open and led 24-6 at halftime. "I think right now we're very close to being as good a football team as we were last year," he said.

The Mustangs were 11-0-1 last season. Lance Mcllhenny threw two touchdown passes and Reggie Dupard and Jeff Atkins each ran for a touchdown for SMU in a game played before 62,000 spectators on a chilly afternoon in Japan's National Stadium, the site of the 1964 Olympics. "We had a couple of opportunities in the first half," said Collins. "It seems we made our running attack go, and that made our passing work." SMU opened the scoring in the first quarter when Cougar punter Robert Myers lost his grip on a snap and was tackled on Houston's 3-yard line. Mustang tailback Atkins bulled into the end zone from 1 yard out, and the extra point made it 7-0.
