Kids rip through attics and basements in mad frenzies, beating off encroaching siblings with mannerisms sure to please ghouls and gargoyles, and adults, invited to a "come in costume" party, stand behind picking up the cast-offs, pondering, "Is this really me?" It's Halloween and costuming can be fun. New on the market this year are Kooky Spooks inflatable costumes. They come with poncho, headgear and paint. Any kid with good lungs can blow up the creatures that tower above the bonnet. Then, all it takes is another good-lunged person to inflate the bonnet itself to fit snugly on the wearer's head.

A quick tie of the strings under the chin, and there it is! One child with a huge head towering 18 inches above his own. Dare anyone to miss that on the street! The matching vinyl poncho is a plus, too. It fits over heavy clothing, in case Halloween turns brrrrrr cold. Plus, there's a tub of makeup that washes off with soap and water shudder and a reflective strip to stick on the back of the bonnet so drivers will see the kids better. And, of course, should a kid develop a hole in his head, there's a repair patch included in the kit.

If Kooky Spooks aren't your thing (kits say they are for kids of all ages), ever consider roaming the thrift shops? They're full of hats and belts and knicks and knacks to fit together for a perfect costume. It might be an inexpensive way to find just the thing to freak out with this year. For those who like to make their own masks, here are two you can make at home. For Mr. Bug Eyes, glue two smaller plates (preferably dark brown) to a larger, red plate.

Use spools from leftover ribbon to make the eyes, inserting white paper cut-outs to resemble eyeballs with pupils. To make antennae, wrap yarn around two wires and top each with a yarn pompon. Pretty Piggy is a strictly feminine pig and she'll be the belle of any Halloween ball. Attach a paper cup to a larger paper plate and trim the plate with red circles for rosy cheeks and paper triangles for ears. Curl pink ribbon and attach to the plate as ringlets.

To secure the masks to the face, use yarn ties. Punch small holes on each side of the mask and insert a strand of yarn, knotted at one end, in each of the holes. and pretty pig. Household garments can be used for the rest of the costume and tails can be added if suitable. Reflective tape should also be added so the child can be seen In the dark, Children will have fun designing their own animal masks at home with different size and color paper plates.
