NEW CASTLE NEWS, MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 197 Westminster NAIA national football champs Sophomore quarterback Mike Manley's pass was knocked awav By MIKE LEITERA In six plays Anderson covered the 53 yards with Manley connecting on four of five passes with split end Hick Pet tier hauling in a five-yarder for the second score at 4:45 The Ravens pulled to within five points as Manley hit Carpenter Tor the two-point conversion. Bierbach, who was given a rest by coach Burry because of a bruised rib, reentered the game to lead the Titan offense. Keeping the ball on the ground Veres, who gained 105 yards in the contest, carried the pigskin five times for 18 yards and ate up valuable time on the clock. TITAN NOTES After a reading of the NAIA Code of Ethics there was a moment of silence held for those persons from Marshall University and Wichita State University who were killed in two separate airplane crashes this season Joe Veres gained extra yardage in the second period when he had the ball pop out of his hands into the air and come right back to him Unusual pass reception in the fourth quarter kept Anderson's drive for a TD alive. Manley's pass bounced off the shoulders of Carpenter and Westminster's Fran Tobias into the waiting hands of Rector at the five This was Rector's first game at fullback.

He played eornerback all season and was pressed into service when starter Bill Isenhour was injured. Losing coach Dick oung hud nothing but praise for trie Titans, but felt that if there was another minute left in the game his Ravens' could have pulled it out. They might have not needed any more time to win the game as Fimilay coach By Morgan stated at the awards banquet Saturday evening. With 15 seconds left in the game Anderson made a desperate attempt to get the winning touchdown and Manley tossed a 31 yard pass to flanker Kirk Carpenter, who stepped out of bounds to stop the clock with seven seconds left. Morgan stated, 'if his blocker would have blocked to the outside instead of the inside Carpenter would have gone all tiie way." Dan Perkins set up the first Raven score in the fourth period when he picked off a Gene McNamara pass at his 10 yard line and brought it out to the 33.

Manley went to the air hitting on five of eight passes for 32 yards including a .1 toss of three yards to tight end Warren Ferguson. The drive was helped along by two Westminster penalties that accounted for 20 yards. Neal Rector caught the two-point conversion pass from Manley to give the Ravens an outside chance of victory. Anderson's defense knew it had to stop the Titans if they were to pull the game out and it did as the Titans were forced to punt. by safety-man Jeff Thompson and the Titans had possession.

But the Havens defense was just as tough. Alter picking up a first down the Titans found themselves at their 28 with a third and 24 situation for a first down. Burn' surprised the Havens with a 51 yard quick kick by punter Price to put them in a hole at their 2lJ. Anderson started to mount a drive at this point and had gotten to the Titans 19. but an alert Don Grimm intercepted a Mauley pass at the four and returned it to the 18.

Westminster turned right around and marched 82 yards in 17 plays for its second touchdown as Bierbach and split end Dave Milliron combined for a 17 yard scoring play. It was a great play as Bierbach had to throw the pass opposite the way he was running and Milliron had to fight off two defenders to hold onto the ball. The Bierbach-Milliron combination worked again late in the second period after a short punt to cap a 32 yard drive in six plays. Westminster tallied the first time it had the ball in the opening quarter as it put on a 50 yard march with halfback Joe Veres bolting in from the one. Ken Kassio set up the drive bv intercepting a Raven pass at the 50.

News Sports Writer The NAIA officials went through groat pains to secure a tarpaulin last week to try and keep l'aggart Stadium dry for the National Division II Football Championship between Westminster College and Anderson College Saturday. The tarpaulin did what ol was supposed to do keep the rain and water off the field of play, but the ground crew slipped up. In taking the tarp off they lei all the water drain back onto the field in not realizing trie tarp was in two pieces. This created a gigantic mudhole between 40 yard lines, but might have been a good omen for Dr. Harold Bum's Titans who played seven out of ten games this season in the slop.

Led by senior signal caller Dave Bierbach, who threw two touchdown passes. Westminster whipped ihe visitors from Indiana 21-16 for its first National Championship. It also marked Lie 15th consecutive victory for the Titans who haven't lost since Oct. of 1969. Saturday's turning point came late in the first quarter with the Titans holding a 7-0 lead.

Also named to the Press Small College team from Westminster were Mike Annarella. Bob Mathews and Fran Tobias, for the second straight year.

News Sports Editor Joe Veres is 5-9, 170 pounds, the ideal height and weight for a championship ping pong player, but how about a national championship football player. Veres played a big role for the Westminster College Titans this season in their drive for an undefeated season and a national title. The crowning of glory7 came Saturday afternoon at Taggart Stadium when the Titans held off Anderson College for a 21-16 victory and the NAIA Division II National Football Championship. A disappointing crowd of less than 5,000 watched as Veres, nearly 100 pounds lighter than some of the players on the Anderson defensive front wall, rushed for 105 yards in 25 carries, the second straight LOO-plus yardage game in a row. Veres, who likes ping pong almost as much as football and proved it when he won the college championship last Wednesday, scored ihe first He passed 36 times, completing 20 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, while the speedy flanker Kirk Carpenter pulled in eight of those passes for 119 yards.

Both teams were feted to a banquet following the game at the Holiday Inn on Route 422 presented by the NAIA. A. O. Duer, executive secretary "Dave hurt his ribs against Edinboro and then reinjured it in the third quarter. He was in real pain but never actually wanted to come out.

we had to finally pull him out of there." "The pain was so bad at times that I could hardly shout the signals." the senior quarterback said after the game. Burry felt his team may have let up slightly in the final and have a two year streak of 15 straight victories. Coach Burry7 couldn't say enough great things about his team, especially his offensive iine. which came through with an outstanding effort. Anderson's defensive front line averaged over 230 pounds and 6-3 in height, yet the much smaller Titans pushed them all over the field, at least for much of the contest.

Burry also was pleased with the performance of freshman fullback Phil King, who filled in for the injured Mark Acerni and gained 31 yards in 11 tries. Bierbach was named the most IB of the NAIA from Kansas City, was the main sneaker quarter. even further Coach Harold Burry statement of last week that "he's the most underrated quarterback in the district."
