Iowa rolls by Wisconsin Chuck Long passed for 231 yards and four touchdowns and Eddie Phillips ran for 162 yards as 15th-ranked Iowa rolled to a 34-14 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin at Madison, Wis. At least eight Bowl representatives were at Camp Randall Stadium to witness the explosive offense and hard-hitting defense of the Hawkeyes, 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Michigan State prevails Aaron Roberts ran for a touchdown and Michigan State's defense held Northwestern to 55 total offensive yards at Evanston as the Spartans earned a 9-3 Big Ten college football win.

The victory improved the Spartans to 4-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big Ten. Northwestern fell to 2-5 in the league, 2-7 overall. Michigan State's defense used seven quarterback sacks to help limit the Wildcats to a negative 47 yards on the ground. Northwestern never entered MSU territory in the first two quarters, and most of the Wildcats' total offensive yardage came in the dying minutes of the game. Associated Press 20-play, 96-yard drive.

Indiana's only points of the first half came a 35-yard field goal by Doug Smith. The Hoosiers added a third-quarter touchdown on a 12-yard pass from Bradley to Len Kenebrew and a 33-yard pass from reserve Cam Cameron to Stephan Benson as time ran out in the final period. The victory lifted Ohio State to 5- 2 in the Big Ten and 7-2 for all games. Indiana, which last beat the Buckeyes in 1951, fell to 2-5 and 30. Smith sets mark Michigan quarterback Steve Smith set a school record with four touchdown passes and ran for another score as the 13th-ranked Wolverines romped to a 42-10 Big Ten college football victory over Purdue at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Smith, who played less than three quarters, completed 11 of 13 passes for 159 yards and kept the ball on 12 option plays for an additional 126 yards for 285 total yards his third-best day as a collegian. The triumph improved Michigan's record to 7-2 for the season, 6- 1 in conference play. The Boilermakers slipped to 2-6-1 overall and 24-1 in the Big Ten. The Michigan defense, tops in the conference against the pass, came up with three first-half interceptions and a blocked punt and the Wolverines converted three of those four turnovers into touchdowns while charging to a 35-3 halftime lead. MISSOURI VALLEY Tulsa scraps way past Drake AP Michael Gunter ran for two touchdowns and Steve Gage passed for another to lead Tulsa to a 22-13 victory over stubborn Drake in Missouri Valley Conference football yesterday at Des Moines, Iowa. Tulsa had to overcome an early 10-6 deficit and an inspired Drake defense to beat the Bulldogs for the 19th time in 20 games. The league-leading Golden Hurricane sent their record to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while Drake fell to 1-9 and 1-5. Gage threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to fullback Rodney Young to give Tulsa a 12-10 half time lead and Gunter bolted 30 yards for a score on Tulsa's first play of the second half. Gunter also scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter and Jason Staurovsky kicked a 20-yard field CCIW Tailback Keith Byars rushed for 169 yards and four touchdowns yesterday, leading 14th-ranked Ohio State to a 56-17 Big Ten Conference football victory at Bloomington, over Indiana and extending the Buckeyes' unbeaten string against the Hoosiers to 28 games.

Byars' first two touchdowns came as Ohio State raced to a comfortable 28-3 half time lead. The Hoosiers, unable to move on the ground, had to rely on the passing of quarterback Steve Bradley. But the Indiana sophomore was intercepted three times, each one leading to a touchdown run by Byars. Ohio State got its first touchdown three minutes into the game on a 44-yard pass from quarterback Mike Tomczak to Thad Jemison. Indiana then had the ball less than a minute before Orlando Lowry's interception gave the Buckeyes the ball at the Hoosier 26.

Byars ran three times, scoring from the 2. His second touchdown, a 24-yard run midway through the second period, came seven plays after Spencer Nelms picked off a Bradley pass at midfield. Byars appeared to be stopped at the 15 but broke loose from safety Chris Sigler and ran in for the score. Henderson leads Sycamores Kevin Henderson rushed for 116 yards and quarterback Jeff Miller completed 14 of 23 passes for 193 yards as Indiana State defeated West Texas State 31-20 in a Missouri Valley Conference football game at Canyon, Texas. The Sycamores improved their record to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, while West Texas State dropped to 0-9-1 and 0-4-1. Associated Press Pitt edges Irish SOUTH BEND, Ind.

(AP) -Tailback Joe McCall scored two touchdowns and John Congemi hit Bill Wallace with a 44-yard pass for another TD yesterday to lead un-ranked Pitt to a 21-16 victory over 18th-ranked Notre Dame. The Panthers struck for two quick scores in the first period on the Congemi-Wallace pass and a 10-yard run by McCall following a fumble recovery. They wrapped it up in the fourth quarter when McCall scored on a 1-yard plunge that he had set up with a 31-yard run. The victory was the fifth straight for the Panthers, who boosted their record to 7-2 in front of representatives from seven bowls, including the Sugar, Orange and Cotton. The loss, a serious blow to Irish bowl hopes, ended Notre Dame's five-game winning streak and dropped the Irish to 6-3 for the season.

Trailing 140 at the half, the Irish closed the gap with third-quarter field goals of 37 and 22 yards by Mike Johnston. But the Panthers started an 80-yard drive late in the third quarter that ended with McCall's second touchdown four plays into the final period. McCall gained 114 yards in 21 carries to become the first back to rush for more than 100 yards this season against Notre Dame. With 22 seconds left, Notre Dame scored a consolation touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Blair Kiel to Allen Pinkett. Augustana captures Nebraska's Irving Fryar broke away from Iowa State's Alvin Baker during first-half action at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, yesterday.

BIG EIGHT Nebraska vanquishes Iowa State, 72-29 goal in the third period to complete the Tulsa scoring. Gage set up the field goal with third down completions of 11 and 12 yards to John Green, and the Tulsa quarterback completed passes of 39 yards to Green and 15 yards to Keith Estes to set up Gunter's first touchdown. Drake capitalized on two Tulsa turnovers to take a 100 first quarter lead. An interception by Larry Gilleland at the Tulsa 13 set up Les White's 2-yard touchdown run and Shawn Johnson's fumble recovery on Tulsa's next offensive play led to Tae Kim's 39-yard field goal. Shockers shocked, 62-28 New Mexico State's big play offense, led by sophomore speedster Mark Dunn and return specialist ing toss to give the Bluejays a 10-9 halftime lead.

George Velasquez put Augustana ahead 15-10 with a 9-yard run early in the third quarter but Elmhurst came back and took the lead 16-15 on a 9-yard pass from Rooney to Dave Guerrieri. Augustana then went 56 yards on seven plays with no timeouts remaining on their winning drive and converted for two points on a run by Velasquez. Augustana preserved its number one ranking in NCAA Division III with the win while Elmhurst, ranked 10th before the game, finishes the year at 7-2. Millikin romps Jeff Fishel rushed for 124 yards and four touchdowns to lead Milli gives Eastern through the second quarter and Dootea the 4l-yarder, giving the Panthers a 60 edge at the half. Eastern boosted the score to 12-0 early in the third quarter on Davis' 3-yard run after the Panthers drove 57 yards in eight plays.

The extra point attempt failed. Western Illinois trounced Senior quarterback Tom Bertoldi threw 34 passes for 19 completions and three touchdowns at Macomb to pace Northern Michigan to a 47-14 non-conference college football win over Western Illinois. A WIU Parents Day crowd of 8,188 saw Bertoldi throw for 267 yards, bringing his Northern Michigan total to a record 6307. The. Wildcats piled up 481 yards Fred Young, rolled over Wichita State 62-28 in college football at Las Cruces, N.M.

Dunn scored two touchdowns, one on a first quarter 75-yard punt return while Young returned a kickoff 90 yards for another score as the Aggies, now 4-6 for the year, exploded for 55 first half points. The 62 points was the most scored by an NMSU team since 1972. Wichita State dropped to 2-8 overall. The game also counted as a Missouri Valley Conference contest for the Shockers, who are now 2-3 in the league. New Mexico State, which scored on all but one of its first half possessions, got its offense rolling when Dunn fielded a Wichita State punt on the Aggies' 25-yard line and went all the way for a TD with crown kin to a 47-17 victory over Carroll in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin football game at Decatur.

Associated Press Norm Singbush caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jay Penney with just 26 seconds left yesterday as Augustana captured the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin championship with a 23-16 win over Elmhurst at Rock Island. The victory was Augustana's 30th straight in regular season play and 26th In CCIW action as the Vikings improved their record to 80 overall and 7-0 in league play. Ron Nelson's two-yard run and Joe Mackay's 28-yard field goal put Augustana ahead 9-0 before Elmhurst scored 10 points in less than a minute at the end of the first half.

Frank Moore connected on a 22-yard field goal with 1:04 and, after an Augustana fumble, Dion Rooney hit Paul Jaekel with a 20-yard scor STATE Castelianos Henry Castelianos kicked field goals of 41 and 42 yards and Tyrone Davis ran for a 3-yard touchdown yesterday to pace Eastern Illinois to a 12-3 Mid-Conti-nent Conference title win over Southwest Missouri at Charleston. The Panthers, ranked 13th in the NCAA I-AA, have won or tied for the MCC championship for four straight years. The team is now 8-2 overall, finishing 3-0 in the league. Southwest Missouri, 5-4 overall, fell to 2-1 in the conference. Eastern scored first when Castelianos kicked his 42-yard field goal at 11:47 of the first quarter.

The score was set up by a pass interception by cornerback Dan Fallon. The Cyclones simultaneously suffered the worst defeat in Iowa State history. I-back Mike Rozier ran for four Nebraska touchdowns and set three school records. His 47 touchdowns and 282 points eclipsed the 45 TDs and 270 points rolled up by former Husker great Johnny Rodgers.
