Nine-month earnings were $52.1 million, or $1.82 per share, compared with $9.5 million, or 30 cents a share, during 1982's first three quarters. Nine-month sales were $2.01 billion, up from $1.72 billion a year ago. Profit up despite slump Despite an insurance slump, American Express Co.

said its third-quarter profit rose 11 percent to $180 million, or 88 cents a share, from $163 million, or 85 cents a share, a year earlier. The diversified financial services concern showed strong gains in its travel, international banking and investment services divisions. Goodrich rises Citing chemical business improvements, BF Goodrich Co. reported third-quarter earnings of $14.1 million, compared with a $100,000 loss for the period last year. The company, which also showed improved sales but reduced operating income from its tire segment, said earnings per share for the period amounted to 60 cents as sales rose to $852.7 million from $795.4 million a year ago.

Nine-month earnings were $12.4 million, or 44 cents per share, compared with $900,000 a year ago. Sales for 1983 first nine months were $2.38 billion, up from last year's $2.32 billion. 'Fannie Mae' profit up The Federal National Mortgage Association, the nation's largest supplier of home loans in the secondary market, reported a $24.9 million third-quarter profit, compared with a $13.2 million loss a year ago. The privately managed, federally chartered company, known as "Fannie Mae," buys mortgage loans from local lenders, replenishing the supply of mortgage money to those institutions. The July-September performance brought net income for the first nine months of the year to $61.9 million, compared with a net loss of $99.2 million for the same period last year.

3M Co. profit up 3M St. Paul, diversified manufacturer and owner of International Tapetronics 2425 S. Main Bloomington, said its third-quarter profit rose 5 percent, paced by strong gains in U.S. markets.

The company earned $178 million, or $1.51 a share, in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $169 million, or $1.44 a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenues rose 7 percent to $1.80 billion from $1.69 billion. For the first nine months, 3M earned $504 million, or $4.28 a share. That is a 5 percent increase from $480 million, or $4.09 a share, in the similar period in 1982.

Revenues rose 5 percent to $5.28 billion from $5.04 billion.
