Thufsdov, July 5, 1973 43 Communist Cease-Fire Violations Fewer Than Evfcr SAIGON <UM) - South Vietnamese officials said today the ftumber of Commutiist cease-fire violations fell to 51 for the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m., the lowest number since the Jan. 28 truce came Into force. But they said heavy fighting James Coco Comedy Star InOwnShow By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) James Coco is a liquid-eyed Italian of Jackie Gleason proportions and Chico Marx gestures who will star nest season in a new situation comedy series, "C a 1 u c c i's Dept." continued in the Central High lands west of Kontum where 13 Communists and two government soldiers died in skirmishes just west of that'city. Fighting in that area has been underway since June 7. South Vietnamese government; figures showed that the previous low for a 24-houf period ending at <$ a.m. was 53, reported May 24. South Vietnamese sources also said the Communists were preparing for a major offensive against Kontum, but sources on the international truce supervisors' team said members who flew over Communist-held territory west and northwest of the city saw no evidence of a buildup. A top South Vietnamese general, Brig. Gen. Tran Van Cam, said he Would launch a counter-offensive June 28 if the Communists did not pull back. But the Communists said] Wednesday that the South Vietnamese had launched such an offensive June 16. It was the first time the Communists had made the charge. The Viet Cong's Radio Liberation, in a broadcast reported by the North Vietnam news agency, accused the South Vietnamese of violating the latest Paris truce agreement by launching "many nibbling operations" in the Kontum area. The broadcast threatened a Communist counter-attack. "Since June 16," the Viet Cong said, "the Saigon adminis tration has used a big force...supported by tanks, artillery and aircraft, to open many land grabbing operations in Dak Rokot, Ngoc Bay, Trung Nghia, Ngo Thanh, Plei Krong, Plei Kle and Lang Lau, all lying in the zone under the control of the (Viet Cong)." On the peace keepfitg front, the Vietnamese Communists urged members of the international truce supervisory force to resume meetings interrupted in May when procedural wrangling halted its work. Entertainment World A raving New Yorker, Coco will play a government unemployment office factotum. He loves Manhattan and is delighted the series will be taped there. He is also familiar with unemployment offices. "I spent my whole life waiting in unemployment lines," he lamented, rolling his eyes heavenward and flapping his hands in mock despair. Remembers Hungry Days "Until five years ago I worked 20 weeks a year and then collected 26 weeks unemployment. I learned there is humor even in such a place and that's what we're going to capitalize on." It wasn't until the past five years that Coco began appearing with major stars in television shows and, of course, gave his outstanding performance in "Man of La Mancha" both on Broadway and in motion pictures. But he hasn't forgotten the old, starving days. "I've had to take all kinds of jobs to eat regular meals," he said, patting his enormous girth. Clearly, he has not missed many snacks. "To be honest, I never had a favorite non-acting job. The one I hated most was as a dental laboratory assistant., "Those people who make false teeth are very tern peramemtal. One day I stepped on a whole tray of false teeth and they fired me on the spot. Can you imagine anyone being that touchy?" Humdrum Humor Coco needn't worry about story lines in the new CBS prime time show with Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna as script supervisors. "They are the very finest in the business," said Coco. "The quality of the writing is what will make our show a great success. "So far as I know there hasn't been a television show that dealt with the humor in the humdrum life of civil servants. Colucci is coping with problems. He's a beleaguered man who ciares about other people. "Most of the situations and laughs come from (the interrelationship of the regular workers in the office rather than from the people who come in to apply for jobs —although we've got some good ones on nutty occupations, including a streetwalker. "There will be an Italian flavor to the show because I'm Italian. But the theme of the show is ithat democracy is a bunch of people pulling together who hate each other's guts."
