Savage ran Al Hutchinson of Owen Sound Bluewater out of rocks in the 10th end on his way to an 8-6 win Sunday night and first prize money of $5,000. Savage opened with a double in the first end and led 3-2 at the midway mark. A count of three in the sixth end shot Savage into a commanding 6-2 lead but Hutchinson gamely countered with doubles in the seventh and ninth while giving up two in the eighth.

The Toronto decathlete, demonstrating the form he hopes will take him to the podium at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, breezed to a Canadian and Commonwealth record in easily winning the Mars international pentathlon. Smith, who was in control from the opening event when he nearly eclipsed his personal best in the 60- metre hurdles, finished the day with 4,420 points, nine points ahead of the former Canadian and Commonwealth mark held by Olympic bronze medalist Dave Steen. Smith was pleased with the performance, but was disappointed at having fallen just 21 points short of eclipsing the world best established by Christian Plaziat of France. "The old WR (world record) beside the score is always a nice said Smith, who watched from the sidelines with an ankle injury while Plaziat set the mark, when this event was last contested two years ago.

He gave a small but appreciative crowd at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre plenty to cheer about right from the start, when he raced to a winning time of 8.05 seconds in the 60-metre hurdles, a scant two one-hundredths of a second off his personal best. He then uncorked an indoor personal best of 7.43 metres in the long jump to create some breathing space between him and challenger Thorsten Dauth of Germany, who clocked 8.07 in the hurdles but jumped only 6.69 metres to fall more than 150 points behind after two events. Smith added personal bests in both the shot put, 14.93 metres, and the high jump, 2.07 metres. Dauth won the shot put at 16.05. Dauth finished a distant second with 4,178 points.

American Drew Fucci was third with 4,015, followed by Richard Hesketh of Calgary Garth Peet of the University of Toronto (3,692) and Carlos O'Connell of Ireland Smith needed a time of two minutes, 37.37 seconds in the 1,000 metres to break Plaziat's mark. He crossed the finish line in 2:39.40. in at Port Hutchinson received $2,000 while McIntyre and Martin each claimed $1,500 and Turcotte and Sharples $1,000.
