Spanish-English TV for Children To Debut Mc$buffl.R(gflMftfr^ Thu ^aY ^July 5, 1973 25 By PATRICIA McCORMACK NEW YORK (UPI) - BC-TV sounds as though it might be another Stone Age TV cartoon show. Not so. BC in this case stands for BiCultural. The BC -TV is [bicultufal children's television |-a federally funded, fton-profit organization formed in 1972 to Ed*catiM Today develop the nation's first Spanish-English children's edu cational television program. The idea? Make it bilingual and bicultural and show it on a daily, national basis. The program makes its debut in the fall and is intended for use on facilities of the Public SAVE LIKE A MILLIONAIRE ON AS LITTLE AS $100! 6.04% ACTUAL RETURN ON 2 YR. Will Incorporate All The show's format will incorporate all the electronic magic and technical finery now standard for children's educational television. A live cast of characters will be interspersed with film, computerized animation, music, storybook characters, myths, I fantasies, games, song and dance to convey educational curriculum. Spanish heritage, culture and customs will be honored and provide a common basis for all cultures. Program time will be! equally divided between the; Spanish and English languages. The target audience: Millions of young American children- bom Spanish-oriented and Anglos (white, black, red, and yellow). The age group: From preschool through the primary grades. The long-term purpose of this program, funded by the U.S. Office of Education (USOE): I "To strengthen the nation through ever-developing increments of unity and understand ing on the one band while assuring the full vigor and contribution to society ol an heretofore untapped human resource approaching 14 million persons." Does BC-TV want and need both a Spanish-oriented and an Anglo audience? Yes. The reason: Genuine bilingualism- biculturalism cannot be achieved without it. An Anglo audience is as essential as the Spanish-oriented to achieve the sought-after goal. The desired bilingualism- biculturalism will occur only when Anglo and Spanish- oriented children become familiar with the language, heritage and customs of the other. That's the theory.
