12 The Sun Times Owen Sound TTiura Feb 22 1979 i Quebec athletes dominating Games in completed sports and descending by half-points to 12th place Quebec held only a five-point lead over Ontario But La Belle Province already was substantially ahead in several sports still in progress and the final margin appeared likely to widen The Quebec liftere who receive psychologies! preparation and are encouraged to the bar performed awesomely Wednesday Gilles Desmarais of Montreal eel national junior records with hie snatch jerk and total lift aa he won the 52kg division by 12V5 kilos over Vijay Sharma of Enfield NS A second Nova Scotian Terry Bogle of Stewiacke took the bronze Michel Viau of St Stanislas de Kostka beat Rick Green of New Glasgow NS by exactly the same margin in the 56kg class and Yves Lefebvre of Ste Brigitte de Laval was a full 15 kilos ahead of Ian Webb of Coldwater Ont If the Quebec lifters were encouraged to love the bar there was no evidence that the judokas were instilled with any similar feelings toward their opponents Fifteen-year-old Alain Derosby of Reptiles in the 53kg division and IB-year-old Sylvain Fillion also of Sept-Iles in the 58kg class both outclassed their opponents as Deroeby won five bouts and Fillion four to claim their gold medals Darren Takao of Lethbridge Alta and David Kim of Toronto were second and third in the lighter division and Paul Hernandez of Truro NS and Robert VanSoest of Edmonton were the silver and bronze medallists behind Fillion A last-round clash with Ontario which Quebec won 8-1 was decisive in the women's fencing Lucie Gravel of Joliette Jacynthe Poirier of Chibougamau and Marie Veilleux of Montreal finished 1-2-3 in the individual competition as all three defeated Lillian Dobay of Toronto who had been their chief rival in the medal chase By ED SIMON BRANDON Man (CP) Competition began in the last three of the IB sports on the Canada Winter Games program Wednesday and the pattern was familiar Quebec weightlifters won the first three weight classes by healthy margins two of their team-mates were the first gold medallists in judo and the province's wrestling team won 17 of 21 bouts with all four loans eligible to fight another day The Quebecois completed a sweep of all four foil fencing titles as they took all three individual medals on their way to the women's team championship after the men had taken team and individual golds Tuesday And Pierre Harvey of Rimouski winner of 10-kUomatre crosscountry skiing race picked up another gold as he led his team to victory in the 3x75-kilometrs relay Here and there a soft spot appeared in the impressive Quebec lineup The province's figure skaters managed only a silver and a bronze in three finals Brad Peters of Brampton Ont finished ahead of two Quebecers in foe men's gymnastics allround competition and the Quebec skiers were third behind Ontario and British Cdumbia in the women's 3x5-kilometre cross-country relay With eight victories in 14 final events for the day Quebec ran its gold-medal total to 26 of a possible 51 Ontario moved into a second-place tie with BC at six followed by Manitoba with four New Brunswick with three Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia with two and Alberta and Prince Edward Island with one each Another 48 gold medals remained to be won in the last three days of the Games but only two in men's and women's curling were beyond Quebec's grasp The province's two rinks managed only a single victory between them in eight games of preliminary competition and had no chance to reach the semi-finals In official point standings based on a 10-9-8-7-6-54-3 scale for the first eight places CP photo ALL TIED UP Dan Koda cm top of Thunder Bay and Mike Polumbo of Calgary appear all tied up like a pretzel However the pair knew what they were doing in foe wrestling competition of the Canada Winter Games Kocia won foe event Rangers Blues brawl spills oyer into corridor Esposito and Dean Talafous carried the Rangers to the victory Don Maloney Mike McEwen and Marios Marois scored the -other Rangers goals So much for the game Now for the wild and crazy stuff which erupted at 7:26 of the third period just after Sutter's power-play goal had tied the score The goal came 35 seconds after Fotiu had elbowed the Blues' Tony Currie Fotiu his penalty cancelled by the goal ambled over to the Rangers' bench area where the Hues just happened to be congratulating Sutter on his achievement Apparently he bumped Currie whereupon Durbano a volatile sort -took a baseball-type swing with his stick at Fotiu's head could feel the air as it just missed my head" said Fotiu no shrinking violet himself He dropped his stick to challenge Durbano fistically then grabbed one from the Rangers' bench when Durbano wouldn't drop his Finally they squared off were separated as the benches cleared then charged at each other again They were ejected by referee Bryan Lewis But Fotiu it seemed wasn't finished Ha rushed down the runway in an attempt to meet Durbano again in the dressing room area Players from both sides rushed off the ice and into the hallway to see what was going on But another encounter never materialized thanks to a steel door which separates the dressing rooms and prevents such confrontations By THE CANADIAN PRESS For 47 minutes 26 seconds it appeared the most notable aspect about the St Louis Blues-New York Rangers game would be the fact that three pairs of brothers played on the same ice in a National Hockey League game Forwards Curt and Harvey Bennett were playing for the Blues on Wednesday night defenceman Dave Maloney and left winger Don Maloney were playing for the Rangers and right winger Don Murdoch of New York was playing against right winger Bob Murdoch of St Louis But then the riot broke out and all that brother business was forgotten as was a three-goal performance by tbe Hues' Brian Sutter All that was buried in the rubble of a tickswinging bench-clearing out-ofcontrol rampage which spilled into the Madison Square Carden corridors and almost is sure to result in heavy discipline for the Blues' Steve Durbano and the Rangers' Nidi Fotlu New York won the game 7-3 In other NHL games Detroit Red Wings defeated Washington Capitals 4-3 Los Angeles Kings beat Boston Bruins 3-1 Chicago Black Hawks defeated Buffalo Sabres 3-2 Pittsburgh Penguins upset Montreal Canadians 3-1 and Minnesota North Stars defeated Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 Sutter's third goal of the game and 30th of the season tied the game 3-3 before the fight Then third-period goals by New York's Dave Maloney Card Vadnais Phil Of all the curling countries entered in the World Curling Championships for the Air Canada Silver Broom probably Sweden and Switzerland have improved the most over the last seven years Sweden has won two world titles in that Kfell Oscarius in 1973 and Ragnar Kamp in while Switzerland has won Otto Danieli in 1975 During the same period Canada has only made the finals 1973 and and has bran shut out of the championships on both occasions The Brier champion to be determined in Ottawa March 4-10 will carry Canada's colors to the World Championships in Berne Switzerland March 28-31 and Canadian fans have high hopes for the Canadian rink Swiss fans will be hoping that their champion can do as well in 1979 and Danieli did in 1975 But the year the Swiss fans still remember vividly is 1974 That was the year that a young rink skipped by Peter Attinger rode through foe preliminary round-robin series undefeated only to lose to the eventual Silver Broom champion Bud Somerville of the USA 3-2 in foe finals Subsequently foe rules were changed to permit an undefeated rink in foe round-robin series to proceed directly to foe Silver Broom final Attinger is back in the hunt for foe Swiss title again this year with only one change from his 1974 lineup Younger brother Ruedy Attinger moved into foe lead position a couple of years ago replacing Jurg Geiler Matti Neuenschwander remains at second stone and brother Bernhard Attinger plays vice In effect it is a family rink since Neuenschwander married Heidi Attinger last year Also still very much in foe running for the Swiss championship is Otto Danieli with a new rink and Jurg Tanner foe young Lausanne skip who led his rink to the European Men's Championships in Scotland last December Tanner has two members from this 1977 junior rink that competed in foe Uniroyal World Junior Championship in Quebec City plus his father Franz who throws second stone A dark horse for foe Swiss title is Karl Grossman of Zurich little known internationally but highly regarded in his home country The Swiss championship will be contested in Biel foe same week as the Briar is played in Ottawa Owen Sound North Stars of foe OLA's senior series aren't looking for much in Sunday's draft of overage juniors and players from the returning players list at the Holiday Inn in Cambridge General manager George (Waldo) Watson is of foe opinion foe five dubs can complete foe draft very quickly and get on to other league matters The major series teams drafted February 11 but only selected approximately 15 players amongst the four dubs Watson thinka foe North Stars will lose only four or five players at foe most from foe 1978 team which went to the OLA major series finals before being eliminated by Peterborough Red Oaks who went on to win foe Mann Cup against foe Victoria Shamrocks The North Stars plan on holding a press conference in mid-March to announce a successor to jimmy McCrea as coach LOOSE ENDS
