MAY 21 1962 The Madrid Herald VOLUME 40 THE MADRID HERALD, MADRID, NEBRASKA MAY 17, 1962 No. 47 Substantial Rains Received Wednesday After months of dry weather, general rains came to a wide area of Colorado, northwestern Kansas and southwestern Nebraska on Wednesday when soaking thunderstorms ranging from two to four inches -fell. The rain began in Madrid shortly before noon and light rain was continuing to fall Wednesday night.

More than two inches had been measured here at five o'clock. The rain came after a week of nearly constant windy weather. Gale-like winds raged e- lection day and considerable damage was done by strong winds and twisters. Several farms in the Grant vicinity were hit by the high winds including those of Chuck Gossard, Wendell Cornelius, Art Sloan, Floyd Richmond. Dwight Softley and others north to Keith county.

Last Saturday there was considerable wind and a late afternoon electrical storm set off dozens of fires in pasture lands over the region. WOMAN'S CLUB ENJOYS HOMEMAKING STYLE SHOW "Fair of Fashion" was the theme of the Madrid Woman's Club meeting held Tuesday, May 8 at the school house with the homemaking classes of Mrs.

Patricia Robinson conducting a style show. Eleven girls took part. Guests of the Woman's Club included the homemaking girls and their mothers, teachers and teacher's wives and the mother of Mrs. Robinson who lives at Stapleton. A lovely tea table using spring colors of lavendar and yellow was used to serve the guests dainty cookies and sandwiches.

Leota Flaming, president-elect and Irma Young, out going president poured. es were Mae Cornelius, Louise Cornelius, Betty Shirley and Gerry Pankonin assisted by Ruby Bullock and Irma Young. A short business meeting preceded the program. The club voted to sponsor the cancer drive in Madrid. Eva Ford underwent an appendectomy at the Perkins ty Hospital late Tuesday night.

OBITUARY Elmer Frederick Olson, son cf Oscar and Bina Olson, was born March 16, 1912 at Elsie, Nebr.

and departed this life May 8, 1962 at Lincoln, Nebr. after a prolonged illness. Elmer grew to manhood in the Elsie vicinity and on Oct. 8, 1938 was united in marriage to Winifred Wenzel of Lincoln. They first made their home in then two years later moved to San Fernando, Calif.

where Elmer worked for Lockheed Aircraft. In 1948 they moved back to Grant and he worked six years for Andrews and son. In 1954 they moved to a farm near Lincoln where they lived at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and one brother, Glen. Survivors include his loving wife Winifred and son Ronald; two brothers Henry of Elsie and John of Denver and one sister, Ruby McQueen of Elsie, LOCALS At the organizational meeting of the village board of trustees Monday night Ralph Daigger was elected chairman for the coming year.

Other officers will be Art Murray, clerk; George Ford, treasurer; A. A. Eastin, marshal and water commissioner; and Joe Tickle, park caretaker. Chester Buchanan returned home last Saturday from Omaha where he had been receiving medical and surgical treatment on his leg for several weeks. School Activities Mark Coming Week The end of another school year is noted this week with the announcement of senior baccalaureate services on Sunday, May 20 and commencement exercises on Wednesday, May 23.

Rev. Ed Friesen will deliver the sermon next Sunday evening at the high school auditorium starting at 8 p.m. Mr. Jay Springman, head of the English Dept. at Gordon High School, has been secured to give the commencement address.

Nine seniors and 15 eighth graders will receive diplomas. School will dismiss at 2 p.m. next Wednesday and there will be no school on Thursday while teachers make out their reports. The school picnic will be held on Friday, May 25. Buses will go out at 10 that day and report cards will be given out at 11.

The picnic will be held in the park at 12 and the whole community is invited. You are asked to bring your own table service and enough food for your family. Drink and dessert will be furnished by the. school. will return the students following the picnic.

Historical Items Wanted for Jubilee Local area folks, who have historical items of early pioneer days for use as displays during the Diamond Jubilee coming in August, are asked to be getting them ready for display. Local merchants would be glad to display some of these items during the coming weeks until such time as they will be used in Grant. It is expected that a good building will be made a- vailable in Grant for display of historical items by July. Until that time such items might be displayed locally to build up interest in the Diamond Jubilee. GEORGE FORD CATCHES RECORD SMALLMOUTH BASS George Ford, local angler doesn't go fishing very often but when he does he wants to make it noteworthy.

Thus last Saturday while fishing west of Martin bay. at Lake McConaughey he hooked a 3 lb. 15 oz. smallmouth bass. He brought the fish to Madrid before weighling it and did not realize he had a record catch until he told Ike Houtz about it.

He returned to Ogallala for an official weighing and it was found that he had broken the state record. The fish measured 18 and inches long and 13 inches in girth. It was thought the fish would have weighed four pounds at the time it was caught. Mrs. Elsa Wendt left last Saturday for Chicago to fly to Holstein, Germany where she will visit relatives.

She had planned to leave about a month ago, but had to postpone her trip because of injuries received in a car accident. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tickle received word Monday evening of the death of their son-in-law, Hurles (Jack) Armstrong of Oakley, Mich. He died in the Owassa hospital from cancer.

He was 58 years old and will be remembered here as a nephew of Mrs. Anna Newton. The Madrid Birthday club met on Monday of this week at the home of Mrs. Lottie Hoover. Fifteen members were present.

Nebraska's voters went to the polls Tuesday in the state's 1962 primary election and the votes have been tallied. In Perkins county more votes were cast this year than there were in the primaries of 1960 and 1958. The 1950 total was 918, in 1960 it was 783 and this year's total vote was unofficially 1098. County races attracting the most attention were for assessor, clerk, attorney, sheriff and the commissioner races.

Harry Shalla received the Democratic nomination for clerk defeating Mrs. Anna Stephenson 334 to 80 and will have no general election opposition. The same is true for treasurer where Mrs. Ora Norman defeated Mary Heinemann 224 to 179. F.

E. Wanek got the Republican nomination for attorney over W. C. Conover 420 to 244 and has no opposition in the fall. The assessor race saw Claude Clendenny win the Republican race and M.

Martinson took the Democratic nomination. Sheriff Howard Bechtel won his race over Don Hays and will face Anton Nowak, Democrat. Incumbent O. H. Ross got a big vote in.

Liberty precinct to win the second district commissioner race over John Wiebe 265 to 148. The latter was ahead in Madrid precinct 73 to 58 and the two candidates were even in Sawyer. George Ford was unopposed on the Democrat ticket. In the third district, incumbent Oliver Hill, Democrat, will oppose William H. Nelson, Republican.

Dale Erlewine had a big lead in his race for the unicameral legislature with Jay Person running in second position. In state races the county vote was about the same as that for the entire state.
