m 74 (JglesbufQ J^gister-Mpjl, Gole^urg.JII. Tuesdoy, July 3, 1973 Gasoline Shortage May Be Easing in Nation failed Prtsa International itte are increasing signs t£& week that the gasoline shttlage is easing in the United States. Production ol gasoline is up. t increase in consumption year is not as great as had en forecast. Some stations are staying open longer hours for the first time in weeks. Allotments to stations have been increased by some suppliers. But a UPI survey of conditions around the country also showed that supplies still are short in some areas— particularly the Northwest. In Ohio, officials are talking about the possibility of government- imposed rationing. On the optimistic side, there have been these developments: —The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) said it had expected demand to SAVE LIKE A MILLIONAIRE ON AS LITTLE AS $100! : ACTUAL RETURN ON 2 YR. MATURITY KVA°L CfRTIFIttl! J /4 /O of DEPOSIT Interest compounded quarterly. Automatically renewable. First National First Galesburg National Bank & Trust / Established 1863 / Member F.D.I.C. be 6 or 7 per cent higher this year than last. As of late June, the demand was running around 5 per cent higher. —The National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA) said American refineries have raised their production to 94 per cent of capacity and have announced plans to expand their capacity by some 2j million barrels a day within three years' time. More Gasoline Available —Arco, Texaco, Gulf, Exxon and Shell have announced they can make more gasoline available to dealers this summer than originally bad been expected. Arco had planned to hold its dealers to 96 per cent of the gasoline they received last year. Now its Eastern dealers will get 104 per cent. | —The Georgia Motor Club surveyed stations and found some have increased hours of operation for the first time in weeks, in Texas, an American Automobile Association (AAA) survey determined "the gasoline crunch has taken a turn for the better." The survey showed only half the stations that had held customers to a purchase limit were still limiting sales this week. Thirty-three per cent were limiting their hours, compared to 40 per cent the previous week. —A Texaco station on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. an area that has been one oi the hardest hit by shortages put up a sign a couple of weeks ago saying, "Sorry, Gas Short age, Now Closing Sunday." The sign came down during the past week. A new AAA survey said 58 per cent of stations In the Washington area were closing Sundays, compared to 77 per cent two weeks ago. Problems in Northwest However, continued problems were reported in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon State Police said many motorists got stranded for the night during the past weekend when they ran out of gas between Portland and Al bany. Washington State had a similar situation between Olympia and Vancouver. Part of the problem in Washington was traced to a "gas war" last year. Brand name stations asked for shorter supplies in 1972 because of bargains offered by independents. This year, many of the independents were out of business, and the big oil company stations were getting only 90 per cent of last year's shortened supplies, far short of demand NOW Union Opticol Co.
