SEDALIA DEMOCRAT. MONDAY EVENING, APRIL 22 1901. bill for $190,000. Senator Magee Not Treated on No Care No Pay Plan. A PHYSICIAN HAS NERVE.

Bill l8 Itemized at Hate of giU) an of Es tate Will Contest tlie Bill. The Pittsburg Dispatch says the estate of the late State Senator Chris L. Magee has received a bill from Dr. Walter C. Browning, of Philadelphia, for $190,000 for professional services during the illness of Senator Magee.

Dr. Browning was in attendance on Senator Magee for twenty-one months previous to his death and accompanied him to several places for the recovery of his health. The fee is believed to be one of the largest of its kind ever charged in Pennsylvania or the United States and has produced widespread comment in professional circles. The bill is understood to be itemized; covers twenty-one treatment, and is charged at the rate of $8c per treatment hour. One charge is tor last treatment at Atlantic City, and another $12,000 for accompanying the deceased to Hot Springs, Va, The executors of the Magee estate refuse to discuss Dr.

bill more than to acknowledge that the charge of $190,000 has been made. It is learned from reliable sources, however, that the bill will be contested. The work of the executors of the esiate is reviewed bv the county courts and it iv be that the charge Cviii be taken up. If not, it is said by the senator friends, that the bill will be jcor- tested if Dr. Browning insists on demanding the payment of the charge made in the original bill.

Saturday afternoon, which made her an object of admiration in that neighborhood. father, who was one of the leading gold democrats in recent campaigns, has a fine home in Nanuct, and keeps several valuable stable horses. of them strayed on the railroad tracks as the afternoon train came along at a good speed.

The horses galloped wildly ahead of the locomotive and manv persons watched the race. Presentlv the engine driver was astonished to see come tearing rapidly down to the track a littiC girl in bright red cape and jacket and riding a spirited horse. This was Elsie Wiedermann. The bold little rider galloped along in man fashion some distance ahead of the big iron horse that was approaching her. At the point wdiere this happened a path runs for some distance alongside the tracks.

The madcap little rider was bent upon saving her wo horses, am she did. With hair ilymg to the winds and keenly alive to her danger, she gilloped on, overtaking the maddened horses racing just ahead of her. Calling them by their names in the voice the animals well knew, the girl gt)t them off the track in the nick of time, and, as a thrilling finale to her performace, the little red clad figure dashed across the tracks witli the locomotive but a second behind her. Then, with a pretty smile and a wave of her handkerchief, she bounded up an embankment at the side of the tracks to a place of safety. The train crew and passengers, who had seen her daring act, waved handkerchiefs and hands in response.

Nietert, superintendent of the St. Louis City hospital, has just performed one of the most remarkable operations ever recorded in the annals ef surgery. It consisted of taking three fctitches in the heart of Philip Gunn, an employe of the Sharp- leigh Hardware company, who jad been stabbed in a saloon hfawl. The point ci the knife blade had entered the right ventricle Ttna had pierced to the cavity of the heart. Luckily the knife had entered tbe heart obliquely, and the result was that the opening between the cavity and the pericardium, or covering of the heart, was lip-shaped on both sides.

The wound acted as a valve, at each pulsation of the blood through the heart but a small quantity passed through the artificial opening. The task of stitching this unusual wound was a very diflicult one. Dr. Nietert first removed a section of the breast bone, exposing the pericardium. The motion of tlie heart cannot be repressed, and Dr.

Nietert was forced to make the stitches while the organ was shilt- ing about. It required three sutures to effectually close the gap. This delicate operation finished, the pericardium was sewed together. The portion of the breast bone removed could not be replaced and the operation was concluded by stitching together the skin and the outer tissues which cover the chest. Gunn is still alive, and as he has a strong constitution, the physicians predict his recovery.
