To be able to hear a fine symphony of people from our own community and conducted by our own should make us all proud. The evening opened with Rossini's "William Tell Overture." The overture is among the more famous in opera. The orchestra captured not only the tunefulness and brilliance of the piece, but also its dignity and loftiness of expression. Soloist Dawson and the orchestra were excellent in I the Beethoven work.

747-2529 Evenings, 747-2437 pianist is a fine concert artist possessing great assurance and skill. Using virtuoso technique, his rapid passages sparkled with sounds. His use of dynamics was impressive, and the dialogue between orchestra and piano in the second movement was handled with ease. As the musicians moved the piece along to the Rondo with gusto and spirit, one could feel the excitement of the audience. The conclusion was greeted with much applause.

The final work of the evening was "Symphony from the New World," by Dvorak. It was a vital, imaginative and lively rendition of the number, with many moments to savor. The famous melody in the slow movement, which became famous as the song "'Goin' Home," was beautiful. The work is a joy for the listener, and in the sweeping finale, the audience reacted with pleasure for the work and for the evening. It was a large audience, and certainly that speaks well for the state of music in the Twin Cities.
