Sherman, and one of his favorite actors as Joseph Murphy. One evening, just after witnessing a performance of "Kerry Gow," there was a brief meeting between the actor and "The Convict's Daughter," was the bill at the Nielsen last evening. The play is rather on the sensational order, depending for its success upon thrilling scenes and startling climaxes'. The prison scenes and the jail yard are well portrayed. The convict, dressed in his prison stripes, makes his escape from confinement by leaping upon a freight train as it passes by, the guard's back being momentarily turned.

"HUMAN HEARTS." That great and beautiful drama, "Human Hearts," will be presented at the Nielsen on Friday evening. "Human Hearts," the companion play- to, but entirely different from "Shore Acres," is regarded as one of the best American stage productions of the past ten years. When any play by a comparatively unknown author, first merits attention enough to secure an opening SUBSCRIBE FOR THE Daily Star. Murphy's plays, expressed a strong preference fo "Kerry Gow." Mr. Murphy acknowledged his appreciation of various compliments General Sherman had bestowed, and, thanking him, asked "I am curious to know the cause of your choice." Thereupon the General-in-Chief, as he was at the time, said- "I like the story because it is simple, straightforward, clean and exciting; I like the situations because they are possible, and every time I see you make a horse shoe, fit it and put it on the horse's foot, I am reminded of the way our farriers were occasionally forced to hustle during the march from Atlanta to the sea." Joe Murphy will appear at the Nielsen in "Kerry Gow" on Thursday evening. Seats now on sale at opera house and then goes on to the stage of the Fifth Avenue Theater, and continues one whole season without cessation, it is a guarantee of its qualified power and its real merit as well, as the Fifth Avenue Theater clientele is one that will not tolerate even a tolerably good one for long. But let it be in moral clean, in its scenes and situations not overdrawn, and in its character painting and dialogue true to nature in the absolute, then let it be enacted by only the masters of the dramatic art, and all New York will forsake the house where "chaff" and comedy, aye even the lighter charming opera and modern English burlesque hold to pay tribute to the work of any brainy author, who, through the medium of the stage holds up to them a true picture of American life. Such was the exper- ience of "Human Hearts," and now In its fifth season with almost the identical cast that presented it for a year In New York, it comes to Sandusky, It should and undoubtedly will meet with the generous wplcome that has ever been accorded it by the American people throughout this land.

Commenting upon this proposed visit and inspection, the Norwalk Reflector says: "As the men of 1861-5 grow in years there is a closer bond of union between them.

This is as it should be. These men have made this country what it is and too much honor cannot be given them. "In the south every citizen takes off his hat or bows when he meets a confederate veteran. If men who did their best to destroy our government are thus honored, what should be done to those who saved it from destruction? Should they not be treated as well? Stampedes a Gathering of Children. Miraculous K-cuies.

Chicago, Dec. hundred children fought and struggled and crushed to escape the fancied horror of death by fire in the West Twelfth street turner hall. There was no of flame in the building, but the cry of a startled youngster was taken up and instantly the gathering of little ones was in a panic. Fully 100 of the boys and girls were swept from their feet and trampled on and crushed against the walls and balustrades of the stairs. Others leaped from the galleries in the hall and fell in the midst of the struggling mass below.

Almost miraculously, only a few were hurt beyond severe bruises. The occasion of the gathering was a Punch and Judy show. It Was Kulius.
