B2 THE PANTAGRAPH, Friday, July 3, 1987 Rookie Allison earns pole Eagle puts Sindelar into tourney lead Hinman nets infield hit PEORIA An infield, hit by Tim Hinman of Tremont was the highlight for Pantagraph area baseball players in the Illinois Coaches Association All-Star game at Meinen Field last night. Hinman was one for two with a ground out in the West All-Stars' 4-3 second-game victory. In the West's 12-6 win in the first game, Hinman, who batted .480 last season, was hitless in one at-bat and had a walk. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) Rookie Davey Allison took the spotlight and the pole position from heavily-favored Bill Elliott yesterday in qualifying for the Firecracker 400 NASCAR stock car race.

Elliott, who set the track record of 210.364 mph in February and had won poles here in four of the last five Winston Cup races, turned a 198.050-mph lap on the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. Allison, the 26-year-old son of longtime NASCAR star Bobby Allison, then went out and ran a lap at 198.085. The lap times of the two fast Ford Thunderbirds were separated by just .008 of a second, which translates to a distance of 27 ever been. I knew I wanted to be driving race cars, but I didn't know what I would be doing." The qualifying speeds, as expected, were considerably slower than they were here last July and in qualifying for the Daytona 500 because of iule changes made by NASCAR for this race and the Talladega 500 on July 26. The tracks at Daytona and Talladega are the only ones on the Winston Cup circuit at which 200 mph laps have been run, and 12 cars qualified above 200 last July.

"The cars handle a lot better now than they did back in February," said Allison. inches if they were running side by side. That reversed the order of the front row positions in the Daytona 500 and surprised Allison, who has already won two poles and two races to establish himself as a budding NASCAR star. "We really didn't anticipate being able to beat Bill down here," Allison said. "It's a big accomplishment for our team." Allison became the first rookie to win the pola for the Firecracker race since Geoff Bodine in 1982.

"Sometimes, I have to sit down and just think about where I am now," Allison said. "Just a year ago, my future was as uncertain as it's the par-5 holes on the Glen Abbey Golf Club course. Sindelar, one of the longer hitters in the game, played the four long holes in five under i par, with three birdies and the eagle. He hit irons to the green on all four and two-putted for the three birdies. jj "The key was that I hit my best tee shots on the par-5s, and you kind of look to them as the pickup holes," Sindelar said.

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) Joey Sindelar ran in a 25-foot eagle putt on the final hole that lifted him into a one-shot lead yesterday in the first, round of the $600,000 Canadian Open Golf Tournament Sindelar's dramatic finish late on a day of occasional rain completed a round of 4-under-par 68 and vaulted him from one stroke behind to one in front. It also completed a blitz of Roanoke-Benson's Miles Monge pitched the seventh inning of the first game for the East and gave up two runs, both earned, allowed two walks and struck out one.
