California. 4 ES Friendship of Warden and 0d-die Ends With Broken Engagement. CARSON, March The controversy in progress between gov ernor Tasker L. Oddle and uaKer, waraen or tne state which is before the prison directors, may be founded on other than stated reasons according to rumor. Oddle charges Baiter with extravagance in running the prison.

The entire matter Is shrouded In mystery. Baker was made warden by the votes of his brother, Cleve Baker, the state attorney general. Secretary of State Brodlgan stood out against Baker. Until a few months ago there was a most friendly feeling existing between the governor and the Baker family. The announcement was made that Oddle was going to marry Mrs.

Dale Hartley Baker, sister-in-law of the warden. Later the engagement was broken off. Then the governor requested Baiter's resignation. The end of the coal strike which has so sorely affected many millions of the popu latlon of the United Kingdom in the last four weeks is believed to be' at hand. No doubt appears to exist In the minds of many people that, the ma- lorltv of the million minprs who Ipft their work March 1 are anxious to return to the pits and hen the oc casion offers will vote In favor of the proposal to resume.

Most of them, it is believed, will return to the pits immediutely, but In each district there Is a small section who oppose anv action until the vote called for on Ihe question of resumption of work or, continuance of the strike has been cast and counted. It Is these who are causing the trouble which necessitated the dls patch yesterday of troops to Chirk, In wales, where work has been proceed ing for some days in the Brynknalle collieries and to Cannock, hi the Mid lands, where efforts were made last night to prevent'the men working. Other owners are opening their mines today, and men who wish to start work will receive full protec tion from the government. In the great military camp at Aldershot, 10,000 soldiers are held in readiness to move at any- moment to any point In the country and at other military posts similar arrangements have been 1IILMOXS HALF-STARVED. More urgent even than the necessity of protecting the mines is the duty facing the country of relieving the destitution caused everywhere by the strike.

Millions are living in a state of semi-starvation In various parts of the country. The settlement can come none too soon, for, of the men, besides the miners, who have been thrown out of employment at least half do not belong to any trade nviranutlrMi rl thprnfnrA reoetvA no out-of-work benefit. It was only in 1909 that the miners Joined the labor party, they having always maintained their own representatives in parliament and there is now a likelihood that they will again separate.
