"Rock'n'roll is one of the lower dialects in the language of jazz." He called rock'n'roll "insanely commercial and insanely repetitious." Bebop swing is the highest dialect in jazz, he said. And in improvisation, Spera said, "I am not only the soloist, I am the composer." With a double admonition to the students that "Discipline is the key word" in jazz improvisation, and that accurate playing has to have style to be interesting, he ran through technical instruction and common pitfalls. Spera 's demonstrations of the pitfalls with his voice and his trumpet were entertaining. One student shook his head and whispered to a boy next to him during one such demonstration, "I do that all the time." Spera said he enjoys teaching and has always included it in his musical career. He is the author of a series of books used in teaching jazz.

His career started in Kenosha, and continued in the Fifth Army Band before he "got his break" and went to New York City for nine years, he said. His jobs there included playing with Fred Waring, the City Center Ballet Orchestra and with David Merrick's musicians for Broadway musicals. He has played lead trumpet for such entertainers as Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams and Henry Mancini. He performed Saturday night with the IWU jazz band. The non-competitive festival included performances all day Saturday by 16 high school and eight junior high school bands from Illinois.

Each band received a critique. Jazz improvisation By Elaine Graybill "The 'dot' stays in the jazz band, and the 'dah' stays in the concert band." An audience of about 300 listened intently as Dominic Spera presented that bit of information at Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. Spera also riveted his audience's attention by grabbing the microphone and saying "ding, dinga, ding," "duh, duh, duh-duh click," and "dot, dot, dot, dot." The man in the suede sportscoat and cowboy boots was not imitating a poorly oiled machine, but rather demonstrating musical technique in jazz improvisation at a clinic for high school and junior high school musicians. The clinic was part of IWU's annual Jazz Festival. Spera, a jazz performer who also teaches jazz at Indiana University, gave the students a pep talk about jazz, which he described as "the only art form in America that we export to Europe." An art form, he said, is something "so profound, so beautiful, that it lives forever.

"Jazz is also a musical language of communication," Spera said, and "Some of you are playing in jazz but still speaking in the classical language." Spera, who has been playing professionally and teaching since he was 15 years old, carried his trumpet as he moved around the stage and made his points with the help of four backup musicians. Since jazz is a language, he said, it 0.00 CD 3 ST!
