I'ASHOX High School Wins by tbe Big Score of 38 to (Special Dispatch to The Ledger) SEATTLE Oct The football team of Vashon college went down to defeat before the rushes of the Seattle High school eleven in the annual game at Athletic park this afternoon The teams were about equal in weight but one had team work and the other had none When the whistle- blew for time the score stood 3 8to 0 In Seattle's favor The visiting team showed lamentable lack of coaching but some Individual players did creditable work Had they received any kind of support from the other members of their eleven the score would have been different As It was Vashon had only one play that they were able to gain on That was a halfback buck across the High school tackles When they came to end runs they were almost Invariably thrown back for a loss On the other hand the High school backs raced the ends for substantial gains and the High school line simply tore the Vashon line to pieces In their right halfback Morrill Vashon has a player of which it may be proud Almost every inch they advanced the hall today was by his sturdy line plunging Lovegren at left guard did 'some ef- fective work In breaking through- the High school line and a number of times he downed the runner without gain Churchill a mere youngster who re- placed Chandler the Vashon center in the second half showed that he had the lame hand Scores were even In the first half with the ball constantly changing hands About -the middle of the second half Washington found a weak place on line caused mainly by the retirement of the left guard After that McAlman McDonald nd Straus by Tine plunges worked the ball In spite of fierce and fast blocking by Oregon until Fullback Lants went over for the single touchdown Spledel failed to kick an easy goal It was the first game for each team ana the defensive work was exceptionally good for so early in the season Tacoma carried it to the five-yard line and again fumbled and on the very next play the navy also fumbled and a moment afterward little Boggs was shoved straight through the line for the first touchdown Repeatedly during the afternoon New York was forced to kick Not of the two teams was as follows: in a squad twenty-three a team with twelve substitutes Those who saw the husky muscular men of the navy trained to the height of Unple physical perfection as they marched through the streets felt a sort of pity for the high school Some even suggested it wise that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children be notified Appearances are often deceitful The uniforms were new and stiff and gave them an appearance of liiucii more weight than actually existed although they 'did outweigh the high school by a numbers of pounds Muscular- strength is not the onfyr tiling that counts in a football game either Score in Eleve's Minute The band played a few tunesthe whistle blew then came the big surprise In' three work on the field speed coupled with the careful earnest coaching the high- school has had showed -telling results and in' eleven minutes the ball yi carried down tliq field and over the New line for the first touchdown hyd goal was kicked ThYee more touchdowns and onm more goal' followed before the game was over an easy victory for the high -with the ball continually in the territory and Tacoma's goal never in the slightest danger It was the cleanest game that has been played here this year and anxious as they were to win the New York' boys displayed not the least sign of rough work or improper tactics The showed superior in team work to the visitors and their gains were made mostly by steady scientific line plunging now through this end now through that end and often straight through the middle of the line interference elicited the admiration of the New coaches and the boys had plenty of ginger and played a spirited game Nutley Ralph Boggs Tuttle Leo Teats and Burke all did notable work for old gold and the playing of little Nutley was superb Tuttle played brilliantly and time after time went through the line and made one good gain by a hurdle over the center Little Boggs did some extra fine work in gaining ground and Kissel and Burko both played well as did every single- boy on llie team punting was of the best and he missed only one of four goals and that with the ball far out of range of the goal
