TTorth $100 for a Lot Worth About One Dollar Tbazt Wm the Real Addition Vatil Ho Bogan Itoeklng I tho lltla According to the story told by a well-kDoan real estate man the unwary are till being swindled into buying lota in the addition to which now has no legal existence and which is situated miles beyond the city limits Over a year ago the ledger exposed the swindle which was then being perpetrated and following the exposure the superior court of Pierce county vacated the plat of the alleged addition The facta as given by the real estate dealer are these: On the 10th day of this month a warranty deed was filed in the office conveying 5 and 6 in block 15 addition to the city of Tacoma and according to the recorded plat thereof now on file in the office of said Pierce county The grantor in the deed waa A Cone of Seattle and the grantee Louie McAdams of the same place On the 18th of this month another deed waa filed in the office conveying lot 5 in the same block and addition the grantor being Lonis McAdams and the grantee Hnrlbnt the day of the filing of the last deed Mr Hnrlbnt came to Tacoma from Seattle and sought an abstract office in this city to learn the conditions of the title and informed the gentleman that -waited upon him that be had traded a team launch for the lot in question but that being a stranger he did not know the value of the lot although he had taken it In trade for about (400 The consideration appearing in deeds to lota in contiguous blocks in addition waa given him and he waa further informed that the abstract hooka in the office showed Lonis Schwabacher to be owner of the lot purchased by him from Mr Adama and that Cone the grantor of Mr Adams had no record titieto the lot and that it would- be to his interest to either retake possession of his launch or insist on Cone recording his deed which was supposed to come from Lonis Continuing his story the real estate dealer said were until recently two additions to Tacoma one having been laid ont and platted by James Hayden and wife Amelia Hayden on the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 7 and the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 8 of township 20 north of ranged east the plat of which was filed August 111883 The official title of this addition is Addition to New Tacoma other addition waa lard out and platted by George Hayden on ftheaantheaat quarter of the southeast quarter of eection'33 township 18 north 3 east west meridian the plat of U-ia Wn The former addition liea weat of Smith A addition and north of and Grigga A additions while the latter liea about alx miles east of the town of Roy and southwest of the donation land claim of Henry Murray last plat waa vacated by the superior court of Pierce county on the 17th day of May 1892 upon complaint filed by the city attorney on the ground that it waa not properly an addition to the city of Tacoma but a clever swindle to deceive people An effort waa also made to arrest and prosecute the swindlers but they kept in hiding and evaded' the authorities Before the vacation of the addition several lota had been sold to Seattle and Spokane parties on false representations made by the swindlers that the lots were in the addi tion laid ont by James Hayden others to whom lota were sold was one HMcLane who became the purchaser of lots 1 to 8 inclusive block 15 addition the deed to which was recorded in book 91 of deeds at page 13 on the 28th day of April 1892 Whether this sale was made on false representations or otherwise there is no evidence to determine The consideration set forth in the deed was $3000 and the acknowledgement was taken by Fred Weiler notary public of thia city Ledger exposed this spurious addition fnlly preoeaing the vacation of the plat and afterwards and those exposures having been copied into many of the papers published throughout the state it was believed that the swindlers had been checkmated and that no farther Impositions would or eoald be made on the too confiding people of Beattie and Spokane This belief however has proved erroneous as another victim has been added to the list in the person of Mr Hnrlbnt Last Saturday a deed was filed 1 from McLean to A Cone conveying all of lots 5 and 6 in block 15 in addition to the city of Tacoma according to the recorded plat thereof now on file -in the office of Pierce connty Washington long as this deed remained nn- recorded the identity of grantor could not be determined and the snp- edition was that the lot purchased by Harlbut was in James addition bat the recording of this deed roves the supposition to be wrong as IcLean according to the records owns property oni? in the vacated addition identity in name of the two additions has been a source of annoyance to the abstract men both before and after the vacation of this plat as the deeds connecting the claim of title and which may propetly be styled the 'missing links nave been suppressed in many cases until long after the filing of the secondary deeds vacated addition is worth about 810 an acre so that Mr Hnrlbnt has really exchanged a steam launch for a lot worth about 81 in an addition which has no legal Low Bata Saaday Kuanlou i On Saturday and 8nnday of each week the Paget 8ound A Alaska Steamship Co sell excursion tickets to Port Townsend and Victoria and return at Exemption to and Figaros of a Baa ant Article To the Editor of the Ledger: Yakima City Wn Jaly 27 As a Yakima hop grower I would like to make some corrections in your article of July 25th headed in Yakima Your correspondent was misinformed no doabt on a good many points or it would never appear in year columns In regard to yield yon state that a conservative estimate on old yards is 2500 pounds per acre and on new yards 1500 pounds making the product of the county for 1893 on 1324 acres of old and 848 acres of new of 6700000 pounds or 87222 bales of 180 ponnds each Now stop for a moment and consider how ridiculous this sounds to practical hop growers and dealers The yield for the entire state laat year waa about 35000 bales Of that amount Yakima county produced 8500 bales The following is a conservative estimate of the outpnt for this year: 18H acres olds at 7 balsa per acre MM bales SO acres new at 1 bale per sere (M8 bales Total 10106 bales A majority of new hops are not poled the first year and consequently pro-dace nothing Supply and demand regulates the price of hops and profit is certainly what growers are after Publishing to the world that oneeonnty yields 37222 bales is damaging to the growers in two respects that of bearing the market and liability of strikes etc with pickers Thompson High Interest Rates In Iteattle A well-informed Seattle gentleman who is stopping in the city said yesterday: man in Seattle has ont at monthly interest the enormous sum of 8100000 The whole of that anm is loaned in amounts ranging from $20 to 82500 and the interest In every ease is 10 per cent per month I had! need for 8200 a abort time ago so I called on the broker taking with me diamonds valued at over 81500 and waa told that I conld have the money by giving a chattel mortgage on them and paying 10 per cent per month interest Well as I needed money very badly I had to accept his terms and when I got the money I fonnd he had only given me 8180 Thinking be had made a mistake I called his attention to it bat he said it waa no mistake as he merely took out the interest in advance for one month so I was really paying interest at the rate of 162 per cent per annum as it may seem it is nevertheless true that the man who charges that interest claims and is looked upon as a good dtl-sen and a Christian and is all the time decrying the monopolistic corporations saying that they are robbing the people of their life ITA' Tear te la e36848770 Tbs raal estate transfers tor Thursday aa reported by tbs Beal Batata Title Insap-anoa and Abotract company amounted to S8BS7
