That many of these clubs were of the mushroom order is indicated by the fact that their headquarters, or meeting places are not listed in the city directory, nor is dill-pent search for them rewarded by definite, information as to their survival at this time.

Since the -biff fire not fewer than twenty-five social clubs of one variety or another have filed incorporation papers in the Alameda county clerk's office, and the list does not include such prominently recognized Institutions as the- Athenian, the Elks, the Ue'innce or the Nile flub. Not listed in the directory and its articles of incorporation do not in dicate where in Oakland it has headquarters, if any. i Fruitvale Citizens Annoyed In this connection residents of Ua-per Fruitvale have for several weekjs been more or less annoyed by meni-bers of a so-called "French who are reported as occupying one or more cottages on Hopkins street and claim to be regularly incorporated under the laws of ihis State. The initiation fee of 25 cents is also said to entitle the new member to the privilege of purchasing refreshments. "Whether the "Oakland French Club" and the Club" existing- on Hopkins street, Fruitvale, are one and the same has not as yet been runy ae-termlned by those, investigating the latter. It has, however, been ascertained that thQ French Club.

at Fruitvale was originally formed by, Frenchmen of both. Oakland and San Francisco, who are of a Class which the police assert are denizens of the "red light" district in those cities. Fruitvale residents assert that French, women of the half world regularly rendezvous at the Hopkins street club, chiefly As to the incorporated "Oakland French Club," its articles filed August 5, 1907, give the residence of three of its five directors at 521 Sixth street, one at. 5499 San Pablo avenue, and one at Mi) Washington street.
