BUYDIRECT FROM US! news Sunday, the water-pressure problem proved the greatest hindrance. We ran out of water, Smith said. You cant fight a fire without water." Smith said water maim in the area of thq building at 277 N. Broadway were pumped dry within minutes by the department's pumping engines. A precious 15 to 20 minutes were then lost, he said, as firefighters scurried to set up relays from hydrants on Palisade Avenue and oth-or nearby streets.

Firefighters faced the same problem at the same building Jn 1978, when another general-alarm fire swept through the complex. According to Water Bureau Superintendent James Neary, northwest Yonkers suffers from low water pressure because of it higher elevation and old, narrow water mains. t- The blase, caused by an electrical sparks behind a wall in a sixth-floor was discovered by a tenant. Smith said several tenants wasted time Attempting to extinguish the fire on their own before calling the fire department The length of the delay is under investigation. By J.D.

Solomon Staff Writer Firefighters struggling to contain a raging apartment building blase in northwest Yonkers Sunday almost Immediately ran out of water because of chronically low water pressure in the area, au-thorities said Monday. A host of other problems, including i delay in reporting the fire, also contributed to its intensity. The general-alarm blaze left one firefighter dead, 17 others injured and ISO families homeless. A funeral for the dead firefighter, LL Garry Kuehner, 41, is scheduled tor Thursday at the Mooes- tary Church of the Sacred Heart in Yonkers. Kuehner, a father of five, died when his portable air pack ran out of air as he was helping rescue tenants.

The fire prompted Fire Commissioner Richard. Smith to ask the city to restore two of the four fire companies eliminated a year ago to cut costs But City Manager Sal J. Prezioso said the city council, already facing a deficit, would have to come up with the 2 million needed to fund two companies. Local police A1 1 Edward R.
