8 Galesburg Register-Mail, Galesburg, III, Saturdoy, June 30, 1973 Heavy Rains In Northeast, ft *1 * rr Hail in lexas By United Press International Heavy rains in the Northeast and grapefruit-sized hailstones in Texas were the principal disturbances in the nation's weather early today. Flash flood warnings were issued for portions of eastern New York state and eastern Vermont as rains persisted over the Central and Northern Atlantic coastal states. A flash flood watch was in effect for the remainder of New England. About three miles north of Odessa, Tex., hailstones of up to four inches in diameter pelted the area. The Big Spring Texas Airport reported that its instrument shelter was blown over by 86-miIe-an-hour winds. Thunderstorm activity occurred in the northern Rocky Mountain region, South Dakota and the Central Plains, Oklahoma and the lower Mississippi Valley. Thundershowers also were reported in Kentucky. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies covered most of the nation. Except for some low clouds and fog or haze along the Pacific Coast, skies were clear over most of the Southwest and into the Northwest. Fair skies also were reported from Kansas into Illinois. Temperatures around the nation early today ranged from 48 degrees at Redmond, Ore., to 98 at Needles, Calif. [ Legal Notices Will Sail To Russia In Bathtub SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) Leonard Moore, 48, placed his $15 bathtub on a truck Friday and headed for Nome, Alaska He plans to sail from there to Russia on a private peace mission. Moore said he hoped to make the 62-mile voyage, escorted by a boat manned by three friends, in two to five days. He hoped to embark from U.S. soil on July 4. The aim of the venture, he told newsmen, was to dramatize friendship between the Russian and American people. He added he would carry a sheaf of letters from Americans to "the Russian people." He said he bought his "vessel" for $15 froni a bathtub salesman and registered it with the California Department of Motor Vehicles for $5. Moore said he has sent letters and cables to the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Russian Consulate here and to Leonid Brezhnev during his recent U.S. visit asking for permission .to land in Russia None was acknowledged, ' said. Austin Morris, a Jesuit with a law degree from the University of California and masters degree in theology from Santa Clara University, said he married Teresa Murphy, 27, on April 28 in Las Vegas. (UPI) — A 49-year-old Mount Vernon, N.Y. man was arrested today after he tried to have an undercover agent help him steal $750,000 in gold from his employer, State Police reported. A spokesman for the State Police Criminal Investigation Unit said Joseph Petrillo of 439 Homestead Ave. was arrested at 5:05 p.m. today. He allegedly had tried to enJist ifche aid of the underawer agent in the heist of the gold. Police would not identify Petrillo's employer and would only say it was a manufacturer of gold objects. Petrillo was charged with criminal solicitation and conspiracy.
