Bloomington-Normal, III. July 6, 1975 Pantagraph B-6 Garvey's image differs from today's hero goes out and busts my behind for the than a player," another confided presumably irritated that Garvey was way behind in giving snotty answers to hanging around with bookies? What is this, a Shirley Temple movie? On top of that, what's he doing leading the club in batting, doubles and triples? What's he trying to do, show every body up? What does he MEAN by winning games in the bottom of the 14th with line singles? Who in hell does lie think he is. Ixu Gehrig? Why can't he be -Broadway What's he got against showing up hung over? Why does he have a wife and baby and mortgage and save his money like some Babbitt? Why can't he be "the controversial Steve Garvey?" Why should people I able to depend on him? Can't he be a little like Richie Allen andv threaten to quit the game from time to" time till the club unloads a truckful of money at his door? Lord, he doesn't even hold out! Get a load of him signing autographs by the hour! I ask you: is that a major leaguer? Not in my bwk! By Jim Murray Lot Angelas Timet Syndicate You have to say Steve (iarvey had it coming to him, that bad press he received from teammates a couple of weeks ago. He's btt-n asking for it all along. I mean, who does he think he is, showing up at the ballpark early every day, visiting hospitals, showing up for ribbon-cuttings bttaase the front office asked him to, answering questions politely SMI UNO all the damn time? Like, what is this, Sunday school? lx)ok shouldn't he swear and curse and use a few shocking expletives? I mean, if it's good enough for the President of the United Suites, it's good enough for Garvey.

right? Where does he come off going to church on the' road? Hucking for Pope, is he? Shouldn't he be down in a bar busting mirrors like every other red-blooded MVP? How come he's not off the .217 hitters on the club. All this, and he's batting .316, too. You can stand all this moral superiority in a guy batting .212. Nobody cares if a utility infieldcr banjo hitter goes to Mass every morning. But a STAR should have more concern with his image.

Take the wlher night: Garvey hit a single, double and home run, drove in five runs and hit one ball so hard it took off like a second-stage rocket just as it got to the outfielder. What kind of showboating is that, I ask you? And then, he's always hogging all the newsprint. Just because he's leading the club in everything but errors, is THAT any reason to run his picture all the time? Small wonder when that gal sports-writer, Betty Cunibcrti, interviewed the dugout one night a couple of weeks ago that the club was seething. I mean, they were fed up with Garvey. And all those singles and doubles and home runs and all.

"He doesn't have a friend on the club," one guy told Cuniberti, anonymously. "He's more of a PR man team, and who asks your wife how she feels and who really wants to know." Steve Garvey, in short, wants to know where he failed what he did wrong. That's easy. It's hard to like a guy who out-hits you, out-smiles you. out-plays you, and has shorter hair and makes more money.

We live in an age of cynicism here everyone is sure Albert Schweitzer is going to be found guilty of fee-splitUng and Billy Graham is really a Communist spy. Garvey can straighten up his image if he (1) strikes out a lot; (2) kicks the water cooler; 3i gets in a fight with a teammate; (4) lets a few throws go through him; (5) pops up with the bases loaded in the 14th instead of singling in the winning run. It would help, too, if he'd grow a beard and conduct some intereviews blasting teammates anonymously. But to REALLY get accepted, he'd have, to bat .212 and get jealous of a teammate who bats 100 points higher. Call the guy a damn Pollyanna.

legitimate questions or that the manager hadn't stuck up for the players lately by putting a headlock around a few reporters' eyeglasses. Someone undertook to remark cattily that Garvey's wife, Cindy, was "always sticking her head in photographs" or phoning a sports desk personally to tell them of the birth of her baby. Terrible things like that. Steve Garvey was shocked. I mean, here he thought the team WANTED to be in the World Series.

Oh well, live and learn. He confronted his teammates. "But my wife, fellows!" he protested. "I mean, WHY my As compassionate a person as I know." Everyone else might wonder also, why Mrs. Garvey's husband? "I wracked my brain to come up with answers to that one," Steve told this writer.

"I might be naive but I have so much belief in myself.
