Police iii seven Western states Friday night were on the lookout for a stolen car believed occupied by two men who attempted to hold up a small country store and gas station at gunpoint just west of' here late Friday Ada county officers said that two masked men entered Cully Grocery and service station three miles west of here on UJS 30 Officers said that the wife of the owner Identified by officers as a Mrs Cully fled from the store at the sight of a pistol and ran across the road to apay telephone Her husband entered the store just about that time and the bandits then ordered him to hand over the cash When Mr Cully stalled the pair became frightened and ran from the store They lumped into a faded blue ear and made their escape before sheriffs officers called by Mrs Cully could reach the area Hie escape car matched the description of a 1953 Hudson stolen about an hour earlier from Hit Camblln who lives near UJ5 30 between Boise and Meridian Sheriffs officers theorized that the would-be holdup men stole the car prior to attempting the robbery Roadblocks were not thrown up since the connection between the stolen car and the attempted robbery was not immediately act as realistic as possible and as described by Cole "to let you see this wagon train as it plods from out of nowhere to Treasure Cowboys did their best to keep up with the star of the show and his wagon train They spurred hard and worked their horses from one end to the other to give the crowd thrills and excitement One Cowboy Injured One cowboy was injured in the bull-riding section Jerry Bishop of Chandler Ariz who was struck in the stomach by his bull and also was cut about the face He was assisted out of the arena' by cowboys and later received treatment under the stands for his face wounds Billy Boag of Weiser had a top ride in the bull section with a side to side ride aboard a big bull Hound Dog Boag formerly of Portland received 173 points from the judges Receiving identical markings was Arnold Hill of Canadian Texas who rode a rough bull to the whistle Jess Ferguson of Richfield Idaho had himself a time on Snuffy Smith in the bareback section and was named the top rider in' that section Snuffy went up high and twisted and turned but get rid of the Idaho cowboy The Pocatello cowboy Bob Shields on Pile Driver collected 175 points from the two judges to claim the best ride in the saddle bronc section The calf roping was an ab- breviated event Friday The best time was turned in by Lowell Taylor of Nampa who finklly got his calf in 182 seconds Cole who also enters the calf roping section each year roped his calf fast but found himself in a dilemma He throw it to the ground He worked hard and finally got it down but then the calf was up and Cole was down But he kept at it and and filially made his tie The calf didn't get up for a few seconds It appeared to be tired So did Cole But he has roped three calves three nights something some of the professional cowboys in Caldwell for the rodeo haven't done There was fast time again in the bulldogging section George Juker of Buhl took his steer down In 86 seconds followed by Bob Robinson of Rockland' 92 and Harly May of Deming 104 Two cowboys overshot their steers and landed up in the dirt The three top winners in the parade Friday night were the Caldwell Riding dub the West-tern Riding dub and the Broken Spur organization They will Join winners of the other nights for the final parade tonight when the top riding organization will be named Other win-nos are the Payette Riders Greenleaf Riding dub Caldwell Three pre-rodeo drills were presented Friday night Ridinf for the crowd were the Caldwel Junior Riders the Gooding Riding Senators and the Junior Indianhead Riders from Weiser Bob Copes of Caldwel was the top rider Friday in the calf riding event He will join other top riders of the four nights in the finale tonight when the northwest calf riding Champion will be named The winner will receive a saddle for his efforts Once again the Freel family from Colorado pleased the crowd with their trick riding exhibition The three Freels Neal the father Cared 11 and Monte seven' will be back again tonight with more trick riding climaxed with the version of Men on Working in the arena during the calf roping section assisting with the exit of tie calves are Saundra Meek: Miss Rodeo of Nevada and Susan Cox Miss Rodeo 'Idaho of 1958 from Lewiston An event each night that has drawn cheers and applause is the barrel race in which girl riders race around barrels go to the far end of the arena and then come charging back to the finish line The top con testant to date is Claudine Dyer of Pocatello who made her course in 194 seconds just one tenth of a second faster than three other riders during the past -four nights The other three who were clocked in '195 seconds were Diana Thorson of Weiser and June Plush and Lita Hoagland Caldwell Amos Miller one of 10 men who organized the first Caldwell rodeo more than 30 years ago said Friday night the wagon train which was part of he pre-rodeo activities "was the finest thing I have ever seen at he rodeo
