But there is much yet to be done before our hitherto magnificent metropolis assumes its former glory and position in the commercial world. It must be remembered that the business of the city a which made it ereat--was almost you a vast deal of eD( re aum ated by the conflagration, and that this must be restored before it can take its former proud position as mistress of the great Northwest. The wholesale of discontent, can in no surer way free! loaD ant tlle 6ame ft uc principal himself from the chains that enslave him than by turning his thoughts and energies to some good works of o-Jiers there arc no blessings, however rich, that discontent will not turn into evils; and no trials, however severe, that serenity and virtue may not transform into blessings.

Low Prices for these bard times goods must sold lotv, and Hays Bruce seem to be up to the times, as we noticed, in calling yesterday, that the store was full of buyore, all pleased with the extremely low prices. This is the material part of the proposition, and would become a tower of strength ize the 'Act of Loaning'." This is proba bly legally (strictly) true.

But in answer: if a donor gave unconditionally to the relief of Chicago, his donation is subject to the direction of the local committcimien to whom he paid it, and who is his trustee, and who again pays it over to R. B. Mason, Mayor, a trustee--and so on, ad libitum. But no public subscription has been paid with condition--the object has been general--and no donors in this great army of soul cheering men are not willing--aye, are content--il Ihe aim of their benevolence reaches its force in an organized plan for benefits to all without distinction. Again it is urged that the plan is too unwieldy from the fact of its being national, the machinery of which is slow to action, and retards the immediate availability in the plan of relief, by awaiting theaciiou of Congress authorising action under the incorporation.
