PAOE I-CHILLICOTHE, MISSOURI-MM1 CHILLICOTHE COMiTITOTIOM-TRHOHE, TUESOAV, NOVCMIMtt, MM sports Show-Me Bowl The stage is set for the 16th annual Missouri football championships this Friday and Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Here's a preview of the 1984 matchups: SUMNER VS. JEFF CITY JAYS In 5-A, the Jefferson City Jays (11-2) are in their eighth playoff and fifth championship game appearance. Pete Adkins is in his 27th year as head coach of the Jays. In his 34 years, Adkins has compiled a 291-52-4 record, the best in the state.

Jefferson City wins with fundamentals. Sophomore quarterback Brad Morris has passed for over 800 yards this season in eight starts. Morris is complemented in the Jays' backfield by running back Steve Sampson. All-State guard-linebacker Terry. Walker is the cornerstone of both the offensive and defensive units of the Jays.

Sumner (12-1) is coached by Lawrence Walls, now in his 14th year as head man of the Bulldogs. His teams have a 114-21-5 record. Walls led his team to the state title in 1982, the last time the Show-Me Bowl was held at Arrowhead. Sumner has also been very successful in the playoffs, qualifying for post-season play seven times since 1973. In addition to 1982, the Bulldogs won the 4-A title in 1973.

They finished second in 1974 and 1976. Sumner features the state's leading scorer in senior running back Anthony Stafford. Quarterback Sean Irons is a quality passer. Linebacker Wesley Toles is the team's leading tackier and intercepter. He has picked off six passes this season.

JEFF CITY HEUAS VS. PARKWOOD In 4-A, the Crusaders of Helias are making their sixth playoff appearance and second trip to the championship finals. In the Crusaders lost to Washington, 14-7, in the Class 3-A final. Hengtes' team lost in first-round action in 1976 and 1979, went to but lost in the quarterfinals in 1983 and the semifinals in 1972. Hengtes, a 19-year veteran, has a 136-56-3 record at Helias.

The Crusaders feature two of the state's better football athletes in running back Craig Lammers and quarterback Ted LePage. Wheeling girls win opener, 39-30 16th annual Missouri football championships I The Wheeling girls tipped off the 1984-85 varsity basketball season with a 39-30 non conference victory over Northwestern Monday night. The Lady Bulldogs led by 19-16 at halftime and iced the game with a 16-1 scoring romp in the third period. Carol Wayman of Wheeling led all scorers with 21 points Ann Burns tossed in 17 to pace Northwestern. In boys action, Northwestern made its winning move in the third period and defeated Wheeling, 36-43.

Northwestern, leading 26-21 at i i i outscored Wheeling, 14-4. in the third quarter Gary Brown drilled in 20 points and Tony Johnson 16 in leading Northwestern. Lammers has nearly 1,000 yards rushing and over 500 yards in pass receptions. LePage, a good runner out of the pocket, has connected on 99 of 160 aerials for 1,420 yards and 16 touchdowns. He has also run over four touchdowns himself and kicked a bundle extra points. Joplin Parkwood, coached by former Trenton Coach Dewey Combs, who pocketed his 200th victory this season. He has a 203-65-8 record, including three 4-A championship titles in his great 28-year coaching career.

Parkwood notched playoff appearances in 1979 (making the quarterfinals) and 1982 (making the semifinals) in addition to its three The Bears feature the running talents of Jeff Flowers, who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards after being converted from defensive back in the sixth game of the season. They were a quarterfmalist in 1980 and a first-round qualifier in 1983. Head Coach Roy Williams has put together a 37-16 record in five years at Berkeley and has a 54-36-1 coaching record overall. Berkeley, a surprise entry, comes right at its opponents with a tough running attack featuring running back Stan Long, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. Defensively, Berkeley has allowed just eight points a game this season Two big reasons have been the play of tackle Chris Osborne and linebacker John Pate The Minutemen of Lexington would like to win another state title to go along with their two previous crowns of 1976 and 1980. They qualified for a first-round berth in 1982 and were semifinalists last year.

In 16 years at the reins of the Lexington football' machine, Gil Rector has a 124-43-3 record. Bruce Cole is the man who makes things happen fyt Lexington. The all-purpose back has rushed for-nearly 2,000 Cards'and 22 touchdowns this season. He gained 192 yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns in Lexington's semifinal rout over Willow Springs Saturday. On defense, linebacker Greg Beck leads the way with Cole helping out.

HAYTI VS. KNOB NOSTER In 2-A, both Hayti and Knob Noster are making their first playoff appearances Kent Gibbs is in his fifth year at Hayti, his third as head coach there. Hayti relies on the 1-2 running punch of Scott Thomas, who has over 1,200 yards rushing this season, and William Cooper, who is nearing the 900-yard rushing total. Defense has been the key for the Indians this season with five shutouts, four of which came in the last three regular-season games and first playoff game. Hayti's record is the first winning season at the school in 10 years.

CLAA basketball At Southwest LUDLOW The Southwest boys closed Die CLAA junior high basketball season in the same way they lipped i( a winning note. Southwest shot out to a 26-1J halftime advantage and went on to score a 44-34 victory over Breckenridge Monday night. The Wildcats, regular season and tournament champs in the CLAA, finished with a perfect 13-0 record. Lance Rounkles drilled in 19 pints and Chad Braymer 12 in leading Southwest. Skip Crooker and Jim Prothero collected 12 each for Breckenridge.

In the girls contest. Southwest were off to a 15-3 first half lead and breezed home with a 22-9 victory. Sheila Weems, Shelly Rinehart, Shannon Gilliland and Kim Lewis all scored four points each for Southwest Dana Goldman hit four for Breckenridge. Quarterback Greg Burton has proven himself to be a double- threat, rushing for six touchdowns and throwing for six more. Mike Wutke is in his second year at the controls of the Panthers. ROCK PORT VS. APPLETON CITY Stew Cline, former Unionville football coach, is in his fifth year as head at Rock Port. He has put together a 41-8-4 record at the northwest Missouri school.

Rock Port, now 12-0, is making its fifth trip to the playoffs. After taking second in 1970, the Blue Jays qualified in 1977,1978 and 1980, losing each year in the first round. The Blue Jay players to watch are bruising running backs Todd Irvine and Tim Minter. Both are near the mark on the season. Cline has commented that he has coached only one player who was a better all-around player than Wilson is top player KANSAS CITV Center- fielder Willie Wilson has been selected as the Kansas City Les Milgratn Royals' Player of the Year for the 1984 season Wilson was selected through a vote by the Kansas City chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Wilson joins teammate Dan Quisenberry. recipient of the Bruce Rice Royals' Pitcher of the Year Award, among the honorees at the 14th annual Kansas City Baseball Awards Dinner Saturday, Jan 26, 1985, at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Plaza Inn. Other award winners to be announced at the dinner include: Manager of the Year, World Series Hero, American League Player of the Year, National League Player of the Year, Earl Smith Nostalgia'Award and Ernie MeW Award, Wilson, 29 years old, wins the award for the second time in his career. Irvin and that was All-State running back-linebacker Ronnie Roof of Unionville, whom Chillicothe football fans remember well.

Irvine, Minter and 6-2, 221-pound tackle Mites Leisman are the leaders on defense. Appleton City, now 12-0, is in its fifth playoff appearance. This marks the first time the Bulldogs os Appleton City have made it as far-as the championship finals. All four previous appearances (1978, 1980,1981 and 1983) ended in quarterfinal losses. Appleton City features a balanced offensive attack.

Ricky Boin has rushed for 1,271 yards and eight touchdowns. Quarterback Tommy Hackett has thrown for nearly 700 yards and 16 touchdowns. Kenny Nichols has caught 22 passes for 521 yards and 14 touchdowns. Tackle Clint KlmkficK (6-3, 180) is the leading tackier on defense. Rock Port reached the finals by squeezing past Marcelme, 6-3, at Rock Port last Saturday in the mud.
